Most people think we have no 'real' mountains here in the east...

Mount Washington is enough to make the case that we do...

I have hiked from 70 degrees at the base into subzero and blowing snow above 4500 foot and then back to sunshine and warmth all within a few hours...

Mount Washington also holds the record for the all-time highest wind speed recorded on the face of the Earth at 231 miles per hour (372 kilometers per hour)...

Here is a snippet from one summit volunteers' log from last week:

"The weather for the week has not been the best - we had wind gusts to 133 last week shortly after shift change and then relatively calm winds (for Mount Washington that is) until last night and today."

That mountain will kill you if you don't respect her...People die there every year...

i heard that since i hiked it {mt washington} back in the day that they have started charging folks that they have to rescue. i have to admit that when i was a kid growing up in the 60`s that i thought it was all city everywhere back east, until my sister moved to upstate new york, and then i got to see the thousand islands, the finger lakes, the adirondacks, the white mountains, the north woods around island pond, vermont to baxter state park in maine. i have not been up there in over 20 years and i still miss it!

Welcome back any time...Let us know a couple weeks in advance and we'll find ya a place to stay in The Kingdom...

Did you see the rime on that cam of the observation deck?

Wonder what you have to do to volunteer to crew up there...I'd like to do it before I get too old (or is that too MUCH older?)...

the observation deck today is beyond desricption, it looks like it could be on one of the polar caps instead of in new hampshire. it would take a dedicated man to work that mountain year round, like you said, it can be wicked up there in the summer.

Found it...    Posted 12-15-2004 at 08:28:38       [Reply]  [No Email]
You have to get on the 'volunteer' list and wait your turn and then they only take 'members'...

An individual membership is $40/year...

I just may have to try and do this (if SWMBO will let me of course)...

go for it, i think that would be a great experiance! i would clean toilets and pick up trash just to be able to spend the summer up there, if the wife would allow it that is. lol!

And my sisters are poopy-heads...

Say they will do it if they 'remember' and are not otherwise utilizing their high-priced satelite connections...
