Milk toast...    Posted 12-23-2004 at 13:53:30       [Reply]  [No Email]
Ot is that milque toast? When I was a child, I loved hot buttered toast soaking in hot milk that my grandmother used to give me. I still like it. I even like the skin the hot milk forms, I know, it makes most people gag but I like it.

It really bugged my mother, though, because it reminded her of the depression, and her own childhood when they didn't have much of anything else to eat.

The way my mom fixed it, you made the toast, tore it in chunks, sprinkled sugar over it, and poured cold milk over it. And I loved it. I also loved bread and milk, crackers and milk, and graham crackers and milk. Those were my main snacks, as a kid.

Oh, yeah... Graham cracker mush. My sister & I loved making graham cracker mush in milk. My kids like dipping graham crackers in milk, thankfully they have not started making it into mush!

Saltine crackers & chicken noodle soup, and grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, those were other favorites, and hot cocoa & popcorn when it was raining outside.
