I just saw on the news that CA (a very conservative State) is about to ban Indian mascots in it's public schools. As I understand it, public schools in CA can't call themselves "Indians, Braves, Apaches, etc." or anything that has to do with the people who were in this country before the white man came.
Even some of the comments from native Americans (Indians) said it didn't offend them. Who the heck is running this country???
If any of you have ever read Lewis Grizzard, he talked about the Speech Police in his book "I haven't understood anything since 1965". While you have to take Lewis with a little grain of salt, he is beginning to make sense.
The only thing I can feel comfort in is that I won't be around too many more years to worry about it. Dam_, I'm gonna worry about my kids.

I'm Irish and I have no problem with a basketball team named the Celtics. I'm not Catholic but everytime that Notre Dame plays I root for them even though I can't stand football.
There is not an ethnic group of people that exists anywhere on the face of the earth that has not been oppressed by some other Ethnic group. If we cared more about actions and less about words and not the other way areound, society at large would be vastly improved.
If some sports team wants to call itself the Paddy Whackers (which could be taken a couple of different ways), or the Micks from Hell, that's pretty much OK with me too. I don't see a problem.

New York State is trying to get all the schools to stop using American Indian references for sports teams. I don't know what they are going to do about the Iroquois School District, though :-).

Check out the link to a site for an American Indian team who decided to turn the tables...

LEWIS GRIZZARD: A great American. America lost a great writer and one funny guy when he passed away.
May he rest in peace

I have most of his books and tapes. The man could definatly spin a yarn.Never quite knew when he started a story if you were gonna be ROFL or get mistey eyed when it was over.
Would like to tell the one that ended with"D*mm Brother, don't think I'd a tole that".Not the time and place now.The goat would be kinda country tho. Nah,ain't that brave.

Lewis's father was married to Ludlow Porch's mother at one time so Lewis and Ludlow called each other stepbrothers

California likes to stay on the cutting edge & try new things. Some last. Others are just for the cameras. Lotta bored wannabes out there. They'll grow up by the time they're forty and notice the aches & pains.
