Need Some Liver Advice (Medical)
[Return to Topics]

Now I know how knowledgeable everybody is here, so I want to hear from y'all.

I went for my doctors visit, refills on prescriptions and such. They took blood, and my blood test for liver function came back abnormal...high...they said.

My doctor wants me to go see a liver specialist just to be safe. He says these abnormal test results could be signs of a fatty liver, leading to fatty liver disease, leading to Hepatitis C. He doesn't want me ending up with something serious later on down the road, best to be safe than sorry later on.

I have an appointment, but...its not for a month. My mom is an herb guru, so she recommended milk thistle to cleanse the liver. She is also checking with the pharmacist first to make sure none of my meds will be affected by this. She says green tea is good too.

Anybody else got any good healthy advice for my liver? There was talk of a biopsy, but, when I called the doctors office, they said it would just be a regular office visit. The reason I asked is because they sedate you before sticking a huge needle in your liver to draw a biopsy. (Tasty eh?) They assured me this would not be done, and I could drive myself.

Time to turn over a new leaf folks, I am rocking on 37 years old. I need to quit foolng myself and get busy taking care of myself. Gone are the days of southern cooking. Time to eat healthy and exercise if I want to be around for a long time to come. Wasnt a new years resolution, but it might as well be.

I will walk every day, rain or shine. I walked for 50 minutes today with Tip around Shelbys school. My parents walked for 20 minutes with me, but Mamas hip started hurting, so they had to quit.

I will not quit, I am too young, and I am not going to waste one more minute being physically who I am. Time to take back what I have been missing. Time to make time for me. I have to, or I am not going to be around.

Thanks in advance for any advice y'all can give. I sure would like to go into that doctors office and have them test my blood and have it come back normal.

One other thought - are you taking any form of tylenol? Acetominophen is excreted through the liver. Sometimes we don't notice "hidden" forms of tylenol, such as that in some pain pills. I have seen patients in the hospital who have damaged their liver due to high acetominophen intake.

But, any liver problems you might have could be genetic or due to other medications.

Good luck to you!

About 20 years ago my mom started a regimen with alternative medicine. She was drinking fresh cabbage juice 'to clean' her blood, every morning. I know you will research about whatever you are advised here, because to be quite honest I don't know a whole lot about these alternative treatments. I hope everything turns out ok for you Kelly. Please keep us posted. Hugs!

Thanks for the hugs :) I needed that. I will let y'all know how things go. I have researched this on the internet, and information is power. I know what I need to concentrate on doing and eating to get better as a whole. I know most of it is common sense, which I have, I just denied.

'Yall should check into this nutrition program, Protein Power Lifeplan by Drs. Eades. They are updating the main site so all that is available now is the BBS. I had triglicerides in the 180-220 range (200 is top of acceptable range) and now have them below 50 (39 to be exact, last physical) for the last two years. The BBS is linked below. It has a bunch of posts from people on the program. "Poke around" and read some of the posts in #3 - Past Powerful Posts and in # 5- Success Stories.

I found out about this from my sister. She was on cholestrol meds and got off them by following the program.

Kelley...I would like to email you if you want to talk about this...I know how you feel and it is scarey...When I decided to turn my life around and get healthy I was 47, wish I had done it years ago...but it took me having cholestrol out of site...blood pressure high...panic attacks..stomach problems...depression...a.history of diabetes in the family and cancer also...Saw MAmma go through bypass surgery and my favorite brother in law die of a massive heart attack at 49...that set me on the right track to lose weight and get myself together...I am along way from altogether but I have lost 125 most meds...get more exercise tending this farm than efer and love it...Just set your mind to it...
Kelley have them run the blood test may have been a false happens...I have my liver checked every 4 months due to the Lipitor I was taking...MAtt was a bad alcoholic for years and had a terrible liver and docs told him that he would die...but he quit drinking and his liver is if we could just do something about his
I beleive in herbs but wait until you see what is going on before getting into them...There is a liver cleansing but forget what it is...But think I would check with the docs first...Keep us posted...I am here for you...KAtG

Kelly I will be talking to my natural healing guru later this week I will see what she has to say. But there is so many factors that can cause this. like do you have one in the oven? alcohol? are you more than 10% over ideal body weight? Other problems that you have mentioned in the Past like the irritable bowl, plus ones you havenít mentioned. Leeds me to believe that, these are not the problems, but merely symptoms of the yet to be realized problem. Without a case history we can only recommend a good care for the symptoms you tell us.

my brother has major liver problems, they just did a biopsy, said it wasn,t fun, stuck a needle or something in his neck (juglar vein) went down into his liver and took a chunk, he,s 6ft.2" 245 lbs. said it bothered him quite a bit, had to stay in the city for 48 hrs.before he could head for home.better take care of yourself before it gets out off hand.

If ya start bartending at the Saloon I'll keep ya away from the peanuts and cheetos!!! :^)

Follow Doctor's orders till ya get a handle on this Kelly.....I'd be awful leery of herb medicines of any sort.....may do more harm than good!

I'd have to agree with you. There was a gent at
work that thought herbs was a better
alternative to meds. His BP would spike and
he'd bleed through the nose like a stuck hog,
walked around in a daze sometimes .... they
took him out of service til he started taking
what he was suposed to.

My wife gets a blood test every quarter because of the cholesterol medicine she is on. Some chance that it can cause liver damage, I suppose. You ain't on anything like that are you?

KellyGa    Posted 01-04-2005 at 14:47:29       [Reply]  [No Email]
Nope, I do take BP meds though. I take BControl and Prozac also
