Chickens and My Diet

I haven't posted in a while about them, mostly because there is nothing much to report, lol. Just a stretch of normal days. Lots of scratching and pecking at the ground. Lots of eggs being layed out for me in the nests. But...when it rains it pours...

I went out yesterday, just like I always do in the morning. It has been warm here, and being as I am not moved to the boonies, I figured it wouldn't hurt if a couple of them wanted to sleep on top of the run. Bad idea. Something discovered them. When I went out, there was an awful lot of small feathers in one spot. I looked around and everybody was accounted for. Then I took a close look at one of the buffs. All of her neck feathers had been plucked clean off! She had a few scratches and blood on her comb and face too. DANGITALL! GRRRR...It was my own fault. So, I took nekkid neck in and put some antibiotic foam on her neck and comb. She is sore, but she is still eating and drinking. I guess it could have been a cat, but when I told Mr. Swint, the old timer that funs the feed store he said more likely a possum. SHe will be okay, but last night they were all locked up tight, so this morning I had a protest on my hands first thing. They want to come out just before daylight nowadays, and I just ain't up that early on the weekend, lol.

To top it all off, I found mites on them. SO, I called Mr. Swint and he had some animal dusting powder just for that, so I went and got it. I asked him how in the world they could have gotten mites in the back yard. Well, he said wild birds, and then it dawned on me, the blackbirds have been flocking through here lately by the ton. So, I am still learning, even a year later after raising them.

BTW, doing real well on my new diet regimen. Having green tea instead of coffee, taking my milk thistle, walking every day. Went to the grocery store and bought lots of healthy raw fruits and veggies, got fat and sugar free every thing. Discovering Splenda is going to be a major part of my life, lol. Can't be having anything with the aspertame in it, bad for your liver.

I was in the store for three hours, lol. Reading labels takes time. :) I do feel better about myself already. Mama said I would feel much better in no time. She was right. Mamas are always right, aren't they? ;)

Aspartame    Posted 01-09-2005 at 11:50:59       [Reply]  [No Email]
Kelly, those aspartame folks are sneaky!
I try to check any product that is even slightly sweet for it. If it is not listed and there is an 800# I can call, I call and ask. I have found it in flavored coffees, hot cocoa mix, even cough medicines that did not have it listed in the ingredient list. My favorite was the Alka Seltza plus Cold medicine, it is in all flavors and even the unflavored one. I really hate that it is in so many unnecessary products.
:-(

Mighta been a skunk. Skunks will bite the neck, drink the blood and pile the dead chickens up in a pile. I found about 15 in a pile once. Dang chickens will just set on the roost and not move while the skunks take their pick.

Sparrows are bad for carrying mites. We sprayed the entire hen house and roost occasionally with something, don't remember what.
