Winter of 1962

During the winter of '62 my employer decided to reward me with an all expence paid vacation to a far away Alaskan winter resort. So, with all the exuberance and enthusism I could muster I put together a check list of all the things I would take along. In addition to the usual clothing and toiletries, I planned to take my 35 mm camera and lots of film. This, of course, was to take as many pictures as possible to document my big adventure. So, on the eve of my scheduled departure, I packed everything and had it all ready to carry aboard the plane. And, then I fell asleep.

During the night as I slept, someone came into the room and helped himself to my camers bag. So, I made the trip and did all sorts of things but nary a picture did I take. However, there was another fellow who accompanyied me who took a snap shot of yours truly which has been my only proof that I was there. Now, if you'd like to see it, go to the photo gallery and look for the man in a white suit. .......gfp

Looking at it, I have tell you, you're not supposed to wear socks with sandals!

So where were you in Alaska when this was take?

You could have stood beside one of their mountains sos I would have an idea how tall you are!

Fern, this photo was taken somewhere about mid way between Anchorage and Ft. Greeley. Our unit was sent there to participate in winter manouvers. However, we didn't get a lot of practice. An Artillery Surveying Unit, we were hindered because the oil in our theodolites froze up. Be took them back to the lab at the base and when we returned, they came up missing from one of those drag behind "Okeoh". (AW-KEY-OH). Now that's surely spelled wrong but it means sled in native Eskimo talk....I think. At any rate we didn't do a lot of surveying on that trip....gfp

This reads to me of some more stories. Now then, your homework for tomorrow shall consist of.........

And if what I have heard or read, synthetic oils hadn't quite made it yet.

Even where I live here, I have had to replace my chainsaw oil with a bit a lighter weight. I can only begin to imagine what it was like to lubricate or turn over a cold engine in that area way when that was obviously before my time. (grin)
