Bob NY got me thinking (dangerous)...

Here is a mind puzzle for everyone...SHamelessly stolen from a site where I play...

Conditions

1. There are 2 beakers each containing an equal amount of liquids

2. Both liquids have similar properties with regards to molecule size, specific weight, and density (they will mix into a homogeneous solution)

Procedures

1. Take a teaspoon of the liquid in beaker 1 and mix it into beaker 2

2. After thorough mixing take a teaspoon of the mixture in beaker 2 and mix it into the liquid in beaker 1

Now tell me is there...

A) more of the liquid in beaker 1 mixed into beaker 2

or

B) more of the liquid in beaker 2 mixed into beaker 1

or

C) or are there equal amounts of liquid 1 in beaker 2 and liquid 2 in beaker 1

There is more of the original liquid from beaker #1 in beaker #2.

Once a spoonful of liquid from #1 is added to and mixed with the liquid in #2, the liquid in #2 becomes contaminated. Which means it is unpure or weakened.

Now, if a spoonful of the weakened liquid from #2 is added to #1, there will be less of the original liquid transferred. Because, included in the second spoon full is some of the liquid from the first spoonfull.

Therefore, A = yes, B = no, and C = no.

But, I wouldn't wager any money on it.......gfp

Answer is C

Proof:

XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
XXXXXX..........OOOOOO

Move 6 parts (one teaspoon) or 1/3 (amount makes no difference)

XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
XXXXXX
OOOOOO

Mix and then Move back 6 parts (one teaspoon) of the new mix (what is now 1/4 of the total):

1/4 of X = 4.5 parts
1/4 of O = 1.5 parts

XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
XXXXXX..........OOOOOO
OOOO( /X........XXXX\ )O

Exact same amounts of each fluid have been moved to the other beaker...

4.5 parts of liquid 1 are in beaker 2, and 4.5 parts of liquid 2 are in beaker 1...

What if each beaker started out with one gallon of liquid and your problem stated to move only one teaspoon? The proportions certainly would not be as the solution stated, would they? I think the ones that guessed "A" would be correct. No?

You started with a dry spoon in Beaker #1 and put a precribed amount it #2, then you removed the same amount from from #2 and put it back in #1 but the spoon would still be wet so there is less in #2 Beaker now due to the spoon being wet. Am I right? Mark H.

Both equill unless they were differnt fluids and the surface tention caused the fluid level to be different in the Teaspoon. Mark H.

I think it's in the wording.

C is correct in that there are equal amounts of liquid in each beaker. But if you are talking about is there is more of the liquid that was originally in A now in B than the liquid that was originally in B now in A then you have a different answer.

The total 'volume' in each beaker is the same at the end, but...

The question in C is, is there the same amount of each liquid that has been moved to the other beaker...

Well since I was wrong ... I'll share my flawed logic as well as my incorrect answer.

Teaspoon of liquid from beaker 1 added to beaker two and thoroughly mixed means beaker 1 liquid is now diluted in the entire volume of beaker 2.

Taking the same measured amount of liquid from beaker two and adding to beaker 1 means the measured amount from beaker two contains a smaller amount of original beaker 1 liquid.

C...Remove 1 tsp of liquid out of beaker#1 - move into beaker # 2= mixture. Now beaker #2 has 1 more tsp of liquid added to it's original mixture. Take 1 tsp of the mixture from beaker#2 add it back into beaker #1 and this mind bender is making my head hurt.
