Preventing Abcesses

My old donkey just diagnosed with a hoof abcess, have to treat with soaking and wrapping and such. Dissappointing because we clean his hooves daily without fail, and treat weekly with Coppertox as a preventative. Barn is not wet, and the barnyard and pastures are all frozen solid.

Before we got him, he had been abused and was victim of repeated founder which is why we try to take really good care of his hooves. Farrier says he'll always be prone to problems because of permanent hoof damage, and we're doing all we can.

Just wondering if there's anything else you horse folks know that we can be doing to prevent future cases?

Hi Ya Bkeepr, We had an Apaloosa a while back and had much the same problem with one hoof, primarily with abcess in the frog area...
My grandad used to make a poultice of Linseed oil,
wheat bran and absorbine junior and put it in a boot that he made out of leather. Once he got it cured up , he had the filly shod to keep her up off the ground more.. it seemed to work...
Good Luck...
