Fired for smoking
[Return to Topics]

An employer in Michigan fired employees for smoking off the job. It's about time someone clears the air we all breath.

Red Dave    Posted 02-10-2005 at 17:09:18       [Reply]  [No Email]
Well I don't smoke, I don't chew and I don't kiss the girls that do, but I think an adult on their own time ought to be able to indulge in a legal pursuit of their own choosing. Even if that pursuit is not as healthy as society would like it to be.

After they eliminate the smokers, who are the nanny's and do-gooders going to come after next?

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:22:11       [Reply]  [No Email]
This comment sure needs to have you put boots on and the air don't smell like smoke either. Another smoker on the board. I watched that guy on TV talking about it. They asked if he was going to fire over weight people and he said he can't they are protected by the goverment and it would be against the law? The guy is a older guy who just quit smokeing a few years back and now wants the world to stop cause he did. Sorta like a out of control reformed alcohalic preaching to not drink cause he can't anymore. It would be like me saying since I quit driking 20 years ago (I did) they should out law booze cause it can hurt you (it does) and since I don't need or want to drink anymore neither does the rest of the world cause it is a waste of money and can be bad for your health and familys also! Mark H.

**big SIGH**, for the last 24 hrs i've read nothing but pros and cons on everything from bad/good truckers, (my unkle has a trucking company, bad/good cops, (i like to think i was a good one) saving money in tin cans & jars (i do it too), unions, (never worked for one or know anyone who does)and all i noticed is that everyone got their noses out of joint...now NOW we have a string started on SMOKING?....well all righty then...guess i'll just have to light up, sit back and watch the sparks fly........*puff*puff*

RN    Posted 02-10-2005 at 17:30:34       [Reply]  [No Email]
You missed the pre-election postings? They got a bit rambunctious - Burrhead and Clod had a conflict, a few others had some interesting comments about the candidates, political process, and parties. did liven up the board.

toolman    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:24:27       [Reply]  [No Email]
hollie did you say JOINT, welll that just might be the solution, would make for a much more peaceful place, lol. now you watch the shut fly haha.

toolman,    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:35:41       [Reply]  [No Email]
it showed on tv here once, a bunch of cops who burned a huge pile of it down the coast, guess they were to close or the wind shifted or something , they were standing around giggling, andbeing goofy and the chief trying to get them away from the camera, i guess afetr he got rid of the news people rumor had it he called in the paddy wagon to drive them all home, they don,t burn it that way anymore now.

grandma    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:06:49       [Reply]  [No Email]
Hollie, I noticed you refered to having your oj and sigs handy one night. We have been on this string before. We must be the only "puffers" in this group. Keep up the good work, use any comfort you can.

Gerrit    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:10:39       [Reply]  [No Email]
Don't think so... I do smoke - wanna quit one day but then again which smoker doesn't? LOL

Alias    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:47:54       [Reply]  [No Email]
Gerrit, don't wait too long to stop. Smoking takes a tool on your body. I have a cousin with emphazima who was a heavy smoker. He carries an oxygen bottle everywhere he goes.

I encourage everyone that smokes to quit. But, I don't think you can legally fire someone for smoking off the job......gfp

Gerrit    Posted 02-10-2005 at 17:01:21       [Reply]  [No Email]
You're so right.. I know - every smoker knows I guess..
Patria quit more than two months ago and I'm getting close to do it as well..

ret    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:05:03       [Reply]  [No Email]
I think you said you took care of kids, correct me if I am wrong. but if you do, some states have laws against child care providers smoking. Most of us here have smoked for years and quit, why act so smart about having such a stupid habit?
JMHO REt

hollie    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:09:54       [Reply]  [No Email]
i have an "inhome" style state license...as in licensed for 10 kids with a layover of 3 (for snow days & school age kids)...and can have 2 kids under 2 yrs old...and one of the questions i ask the new clients is if either of the parents smoke...and if they dont' i tell them up front, i do...and if thats a problem...hey, its my business and they can take their kids elsewhere..or leave then anyhow...this is also MY HOME...and MY BUSINESS...i make my own rules for the business...now, not smoking may come into play in bigger day cares, where there is over 20 kids or so...and employees...but not in-home care..

mark    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:02:05       [Reply]  [No Email]
I can't get the smoke past the crook in my
nose. Makes my eyes water which is making it
tough to write letters to my reps. to raise taxes
on or outlaw body fat, booze, junk food and
opinions that don't agree with mine..

Anyone have a stiff straw I could barrow?

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:25:27       [Reply]  [No Email]
You tilt the cig up a little lean your head some and it goes right by your nose and eyes while you type. Works for me. Mark H.

hey, whataya know    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:33:58       [Reply]  [No Email]
works like a charm. Now my next problem is
drinking my coffee without putting the grett out

mark

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:34:12       [Reply]  [No Email]
Thats harder but you can hold the cig in the same hand as the cup rolling it forward as you bring it up and it leaves you one hand free for the steering wheel going down the road. Mark H.

mark    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:39:02       [Reply]  [No Email]
I wasn't doing the roll! Kept burnin my
forehead and lightin' my hair on fire so I
figured it was safer to leave the cig and try
drinking around it.

Try and explain to a cop your not drunk when
he pulls ya over at 03:00 cause your hairs on
fire < sheesh > .

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:42:14       [Reply]  [No Email]
That would be hard but I like my Coffie to! Just a few things I indulge in but there still legal to do I think still? Mark H.

mark    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:49:14       [Reply]  [No Email]
I don't know, the way it's going we'll only be
allowed to chew on veggies and drink bottled
water lest we do injury to ourselves ..... well
maybe we won't be able to chew veggies
someone more responsible than us common
folk will grind them for us.

toolman    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:30:26       [Reply]  [No Email]

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:27:01       [Reply]  [No Email]
Now Now don't get excited its not the 60 & 70s anymore were to old for that kind of relaxsation anymore. Becides they have all kinds of legal pills the doctor will give you to feel happy and you won't get in trouble with the cops. Course those pills wipe out your liver and other things but they are legal and politily correct! Mark H.

toolman    Posted 02-10-2005 at 18:40:47       [Reply]  [No Email]
thank buddy im calling my doc in the moring and ask him for some happy pills, he,ll probably send out them boys in white jackets for me lol

Willy-N    Posted 02-10-2005 at 19:19:49       [Reply]  [No Email]
Happy pills are easy to get they are what keeps the world working anymore! Heck get bored in school and they will give them to your kids too. You can murder your Grand Parents and blame it on the happy pills not your fault cause the pills made you do it? They got them to sleep better, lose weight, stay awake, go to the bath room easier, make you able to eat heart burn food and not suffer for it, heck the list goes on forever, pink ones, purple ones and the perk it up blue on for all the guys who don't work anymore, the 32 hour pill for fun unless it lasts over 4 hours?! Hey doc I got a problem well come in we will fix you right up just sit out in the waiting rome for a hour with people looking at you? You got to be kidding me the world is just a pill away from anything now. Mark H.

toolman    Posted 02-10-2005 at 20:08:23       [Reply]  [No Email]

Gerrit    Posted 02-10-2005 at 15:44:20       [Reply]  [No Email]
Huh? did I read that right?? Firing people for smoking OFF the job?
I think that's going way to far! What about personal freedom and stuff?

And talking about cleaning the air that we breath, well there are other things that could ( and should! ) be done about that...

toolman    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:29:23       [Reply]  [No Email]
your right gerrit , why i think we should all ban BEANS next , that would go along way to clear the air.hmmm make note tell store no more beans.lol

Gerrit    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:35:13       [Reply]  [No Email]
Ban beans would mean revolution here in PR..
Rice and beans is a traditional dish here..
Air polution is high also.. Hmm.....

Clipper    Posted 02-10-2005 at 15:42:49       [Reply]  [No Email]
Yep....and wait till they start firing folks fer eatin junk food, drinkin beer at a Sunday Bar-B-Q,or buying the correct PC newspaper.....life's gonna be fun then!!! :^)

bo    Posted 02-10-2005 at 16:04:56       [Reply]  [No Email]
The same company that did the firing for smoking is now also taking on obesity...you eat too much you get canned from there..
