Before our white brother came to civilize us we had no jails. Therefore no criminals. You can't have criminals without a jail. We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. If a man was so poor that he had no horse, tipi,or blanket, someone gave him these things. We were too uncivilized to set much value on personal belongings. We wanted to have things only in order to give them away. We had no money and therefore a man's worth couldn't be measured by it. We had no written law, no attorneys or politicians, therefore we couldn't cheat. We were really in a bad way before the white man came, and I don't know how we managed to get along without the basic things which, were are told, are absolutely necessary to make a civilized society. How is it that you know these things, oh mighty worry-er. (you'll notice I didn't write worrior).

You have no more idea of what it was like in those days than anyone else. You have a vision of long ago people living happy and free. But, considering they had not invented the wheel, those people had it hard. So, take a deep breath and clear your mind. you can't live in the past. All you have is the now.....gfp

Cut the crap. As a part Delaware, and amateur archeologist I know full well that the no crime/stealing bit is major BS. The Souix took pride in stealing from other tribes. Bands and tribes went to war against each other in horrible blood feuds. Members of the clan, band or tribe who committed thefts, assaults or murders were beaten, forced to run the gauntlet, banished, and even executed. There may have been fewer possessions to steal and society may have been more egalitarion, but lack of crime, BULL!

How can they be so wise, and they still lost the war? Seems to me, had they had the wisdom to sink each ship as it arrived they'd still own Staten Island today.
Guess it's hard to lose.

You said it better then I could of. Man allways had crime and took things from the weaker ones even in his own race. That is a fact of life! Mark H.

Looking back I suppose it seems that simple. I wonder how simple it was to govern yourselves at that time? I don't know - I wasn't there.

I do like the concept though ...

We are responsible for ourselves. Good post.
