there was a school bus accident yesterday morning in our county. The driver evidently dropped her front wheels off the road on a curve losing control and hitting some trees.
She was automatically charged with reckless driving as there are injuries. In fact, in todays paper, one of the students died from his injury. This is the first death for the busses in years, and this county has hundreds of them. Didn't say
anything about the driving record of the driver yet, probably will later. Those in the neighborhood said that is the third accident in that spot in 10 years. She was going 37 in a 55 MPH zone. Got to be pretty heartbreaking to be in her shoes, loss of a life, driving record messed up, looking at possible jail time, and maybe a lawsuit. ALl for around $11 an hour. They also are always begging for drivers. You drivers sure carry a lot of responsibility on your shoulders.

I feel for her . I had driven school bus for about 30 yrs with only a couple small fender benders that weren't my fault . One day I had a Bronkitus attack about 3 yrs ago while delivering kids . Passed out for a couple seconds & hit the guard rails . Nobody was hurt . I called into headquarters requesting a driver & an ambulance to get me to the ER . The manager than demanded I finish the run . So I did & then when I got back to the garage they fired me . My thanks for being a devoted bus driver . They're always running ads for drivers & I laugh about it . No money's worth the responsibilities & what you have to put up with the public . Ken

Jeez Ken, that's horrible.

Just curious - was it Laidlaw? We here terrible things locally about them.

CDLs - do they automatically transfer liability to a driver? Are the drivers personally liable in a case like this?

I certainly feel for the driver and and the family of the student who died. What a tragedy. It continues even after the wreckage is removed.

Screaminhollow - jump in here and help me understand this liability/criminal/civil thing.

Yes you can be held liable if gross negligents is found on your part or reckless driving. I get $14.90 a hour but it is still low pay for the risk. Yes there is a big responcibility driving a school bus lot more kids involved but you are also in trouble in a car when your insurance limints run out. Mark H.

If we're involved in an accident and we've
broken a rule we can be slapped with jail time
and up to involuntary manslaughter
regardless of what laws a motorist has
broken.

They run the gates and lights, get killed, but
we weren't ringing the bell, we get charged.
