Many years ago my wife and I gave Christmas gifts to our many neices and nephews. An aquaintence wife, no kin, called and gave us down the road because we didn't get their kids anything. I was too astounded to say anything. Go figure.

Years ago, in an airport, I was standing waiting in line. A young couple were arguing and the guy hauled off and slapped the girl. I went over and motioned to her bloody nose, and told him that he wouldn't EVER get a second chance to do that to her again while I was there.
Through her tears of appreciation, and adoration, she nailed me right square in the face, with her umbrella, and I ended up with a split lip, and 2 black eyes. I always felt this might be the prime example of your saying.

story.........An elderly gentleman was out walking hand in hand with his little five year old grandaughter. As they rounded a corner of the sidewalk the old man saw two dogs doing the dirty boogie. Well, thought the old guy, how am I going to handle this....she will certainly ask what the dogs are doing?

So, he decided to take the initative and said to the child, look honey, one of the dogs hurt his paw and the other one is helping it across the street.

And, the little girl replied, Ain't it always the way grandpa, you do some one a favor and get scr3wed in the end.

Best explanation I can think of......gfp
