Ok i looked at the posts regarding this subject and someone mentioned quinine water..Yes this works..although I would prefer mine with a little gin..just put some quinine water in a glass with ice and a slice of lime..cuts the bitter taste..drink this about 1/2 hr before bedtime..will allow you to sleep with out the works. The old man has had 9 back surgeries and has massive cramps I mean gut busting screaming cramps..if he doesnt drink the quinine water..when he drinks it he can get through the night...drinking this sure beat me have to put him in the tub with ice all around him in the middle of the night...

I didn't find the other thread about leg cramps, so I may be repeating info already given.

Prescription quinine capsules can be taken and work well for most folks who have leg cramps at night. If eating a couple of bananas or an orange doesn't work for you, a doctor can also prescribe potassium supplements. They're a bit hard on the stomach and are very large pills, but usually work. It also comes in a powder form to mix with water and drink. Blood work has to be done before a prescription is written - at least, most doctors do blood work. Too much potassium, as well as too little, in the body can interefere with the electrical activity of the heart.

We have a couple of heating pads that you pop into the microwave. They give off a moist heat. We've found they are one of the best things to put on a muscle cramp when my husband gets one. He doesn't get as many leg cramps as he used to.

Mark, sometimes taking some calcium just before strenuous activity will help prevent muscle cramps. The theory is that with calcium circulating in the bloodstream, the muscles will pull from that source rather than from the reserves of calcium in the muscle. I don't know how that holds up scientifically, but it works for me - when I can remember to do so. Just popping a few Tums is easiest on my stomach when I need some calcium.

doc called me at home one moring just after gettin out of the hospital, asked i f i had any bananas i said yup two, she said eat them right now while i stay on the phone with you, i was to sick to drive to town , she had a precripton ready for my wife at noon( a hour away from the call) of them potassium capsules had to get on the right away, scared the heck out of me, few days later and more blood work she took me off them, still have a huge bottle of them here, guess it didn,t take much to build me back up , but she was scared of heart problems when it was so low that moring, thats why the bannas, wonder she never scared me to death anyway.

Yikes! That would be a scary phone call to receive, toolman. I'm glad she did the blood work - and that you had bananas handy!

When my husband's rheumatologist talked about putting potassium supplements, my husband told the doc he eats a couple of bananas every day. The doc replied, "For every cup of coffee or can of pepsi you drink, you wipe out 10 bananas." I think he was saying the caffeine in coffee and pepsi works like a water pill and helps to deplete your body of potassium.

Well I do know that if one eats 5 veggies and fruits in moderation, that this is healthy....potassium levels falling can and has caused deadly heart attacks, also, weakening muscles to the point that one cannot eat right, which includes fruits, veggies ..........the natural pectin in apples and other fruits are beneficial also. It just pays to try and eat the food groups that do assist in maintaining a healthy body.

SH, I get leg cramps bad, wake up screaming in the middle of the night. I tried that Legotrin?? SP? and it knocked me out!
Doctor told me to eat one or two bananas a day and it really does work. Said it'll replace the potasium, and I guess it does.

just what is this quinine water anyway, we probably have it here but i don,t ever recall hearing that name, sure would be good if it helps , leg and back pain are always worse at night for some reason and it would be good to get a decent nights sleep some night.

TM, quinine use to be the drink of choice prescribed by the big brass in the US Military. It was used a lot during the construction of the Panama Canal to aid in warding off malaria.

I haven't seen any in a long time but once upon a time you could buy quinine pills for colds and such.....Taken like aspirin, you don't notice the taste, unless you burp.....gfp

i can,t take asprin wish i could because of family history of heart disease but i bleed inside now , just got on steoriods to stop it again this time.

Alias    Posted 02-18-2005 at 21:27:36       [Reply]  [No Email]
I don't know if quinine has any asprin. I only mentioned asprin because the pill are about the same size and white. A check on the label would tell you if they are safe~~~maybe (smile).

I don't have any heart or stomach problems unless they started since my last complete checkup. For the most part I feel pretty good except for a couple of bone spurs in my right leg that have caused a lot of inflamation and swelling. I'm going for Physical therapy twice weekly for that and it seems to be helping.....gfp
