A hen with ducklings?

In the spring I had a duck to hatch 13 babies. We were having cold wet weather at the time and one by one they started dissappearing. I thought something was killing them until I started finding them in the grass, dead. They were getting cold and wet and for some reason the mother duck just kept taking them all through the wet grass. If I hadn't caught the remaining 4 babies and put them in my brooder, I wouldn't have saved any of them. I decided to "set" a hen on 10 duck eggs and 6 chichen eggs. It worked wonderful! She hatched them all and she doesn't mind when her babies get in the little duck pond. She takes them in the chicken house at night. Has anyone out there ever tried this?

Sounds like quite a family, Rhonda! I'd sure like to see a picture (if it's possible :)

One local fella had a tame goose that attracted a wounded duck that adopted (or stole, came home with anyway) a clutch of baby wild geese. Then all the goslings flew alongside his skiboat. What a sight! They were banded, hitched a flight south and came back to his dock this spring.
he - umm - has to cover the boat at nite - the geese like to decorate - heh heh

Way back when, late 40's, Mom used to hatch goose eggs with old hens. She took goslings away from hen when the eggs hatched and raised them that way. Death rate was pretty high. After a few years of this she lost interest or just got tired of all the hassle an just let the geese handle everything. Had more geese than she could handle then.
