Does anyone live where there is a county or local income tax? I live in a tax freindly (for NY) county where we are taxed at a much lower rate than the neighboring counties. We recieve fewer services and are happy with that. I work in a county that has taxed it,s residents to the constitutional limit they recieve every thing imaginable that local goverment can provide. In that they are at the constitutional limit for property tax they are kicking around the idea of an income tax. The kicker is is that they want non resident commuters to also pay this tax claiming that we benefit from county services. I know one of their county legislators and asked him how I benefit and his reply was that I drive on their roads and if needed their sheriff and emergency services come to my aid. I commute on state hiways and only drive 1 mile on a county road to my workplace my wife also works in that county and travels only on state roads.
The main town is the closest major population center around so that is where we and probably the majority of other commuters do our shopping therby contributing to the community with our sales tax dollars in my opinion providing more in benefit than we will ever take in services.
Has anyone else ever run into a situation like this?

Yup, Pierce County Washington, the state sales tax rate is 6.5%, but locally we pay about 8.8%

It's worse in Seattle, about 50 miles north of me. They have the state tax, county tax and local sales taxes. Don't know what the total rate is, but I know it's higher than here. In addition, if you eat in a restaurant or stay in a hotel or rent a car, they slap an additional tax on that. I suspect that's because then they can tax tourists, who don't have a vote.

Yes indeed! Dear ole Harford County, Md. has a 50 percent piggy back tax on earnings. But, that may change cause this week the general assembly voted to allow Slot Machines at 6 locations in the state. So, they will probably raise taxes just to insure they have enough money to administer gambleing........gfp
