Transplanting native sword ferns

My daughter is digging up some shady spots in her yard and wants to plant ferns. I have a whole mess of sword ferns that I'm just gonna get rid of, and would like to offer them to her. Are there any tricks to transplanting them? The ones I'm getting rid of are wild native ferns, the clumps are about 3 ft across, we'd probably like to divide them as well. Any pointers? BTW, we're located in the Seattle area. Thanks!
