No expert here but it could be a compressed file. I use WinZip to open them. I did post a question on another board and got some answers on free zip software. Go there and look. If it does not help post your question over there.

Check with whoever sent you the files and ask them what they created the files with. You need to know if they are a Word file (open with MS Word), picture (you can open most picture formats with a browser) or something else. If they made the file with a program you don't have, you may be out of luck. For example, a guy today sent me an MS Publisher file, I don't have MS Publisher so I couldn't open it. If you open a picture or MS Word file with notepad, it will look like garbage.

If you have your computer set up to let you see the file extension (like .jpg or .doc) you can sometimes tell what to use that way. When you install the software, it should set up an association for you so all you have to do is double click the file to open it, so if you can't open it either you probably don't have the program or your association for that file type got fouled up.

I'm in E. TX too, near Greenville, where are you?

Hi D.J.
The exact same thing happened to me. The e-mail came from my sister-in-law.(That could be the problem-just kidding). Anywho, it was a virus that really caused me a lot of problems. Some kind soul in IL that I never heard of got one of my virus infected messages and sent me the fix. It was a Norton something. I downloaded it and sure enough, it worked. You may have to go to Norton update on-line to get it. Good luck.

Could be a different format thing. If it's an adobe file, you'll need adobe reader. It acts like that too. As you can see, I aint much smarter than dirt.

You need to save the attachment to your computer and open them with your word processor. Documents that are opened with someting other than what they were written with seem to contain loads of garbage. Try to open them with Word. If that fails, open them with Notepad.

All I can say is, that's exactly what happens when I open a Word document with Notepad. Maybe they have a different word processor????
