SCOOTERHEAD HELP!!! SMOKE DEBATE
[Return to Topics]

EIEIO    Posted 06-29-2002 at 12:16:50       [Reply]  [No Email]
Hey guys I am sure when Scooterhead wrote the challenge to me it was written in good faith and the best ever intentions. If anything I wrote regarding smoking bothered anyone well it wasn't my intention. It seems like it is turning into a debate instead of just having good fun. I do want to quit, it is killing me. I don't criticize anyone who drinks, is overweight or who even smokes. I criticize myself only for being a smoker. I may not even be able to quite smoking but I will try.

Wish I knew where Scooterhead was, he better not back down now!!!

Near 30 years ago I was one of two residents on a job that had a normal daily work force of 250. Now Ya know how a smoker does when panic hits,REACH FOR A SMOKE! It's like a knee jerk, a super would come flyin inta tha office trailer, start flippin through tha plans ta show Me a real baddy sumpthin or other and pointin with tha same hand the cigarette was in. Now I wasn't about ta stand there with there lousy smoke foggin up in My face so I'd just step back and stand there. Meantime this Dude would be thinkin of money goin down tha toilet by tha bucket full.
As I recall I did make one warnig about it and from there on it was up to THEM to show a sense of decency or pay the price. Fellow I worked with smoked but was very considerate. Also would get a kick out of watchin those who forgot.

Another way to look at it,if a feller chews'n spits just where ever He is folks would get right real upset about it fact is lots of citys passed laws about spittin on tha sidewalks. But whats tha diff so far as CONSIDERATION of Your Fellow man/Ladys,et al? Spit or stinkin smoke?

Another thought'n I'll get off tha soap box. This is kinda crude but I'm sure not entirely lost on at least a few of You. Your mate wants one of them big ole sloberin, sxx smooches right after dousin a smoke and You feel like Your havin ta lick out a well used ashtray. Talk about a turn off!!!!!!!!!!Better'n a cold shower!

Don't worry us smokers have heard it all. I wish you all the luck in quiting!! I have tried befor and did not succeed in stopping. My wife did befor we desided to have our daughter and I did for a while but she started again because of me after Shelby was born. I wish they never invented the things and that I had the will power to stop too. Some day I will because I have stopped many a bad thing I did in my past life! The ciggs are designed to keep you hooked for life and I hope they never do anything bad to my health, if they do that is what it will take to quit for me. I realy do admire people who can give them up cold turkey but I am not one of those. That is the way I stopped drinking I just stopped one day and never drank again. I even still went to bars and hang out with guys who do. It dose not bother me a bit! But ciggs are a different animal there mean and work on your mental well being when you try to stop I guess that why I have not been able to do it. I hope you can stop if for no other reason but not throwing away all that money they cost. Just don't replace it with another habit if you do that will hurt you also. Good Luck and I hope you succeed in doing so. I back you all the way. Mark H.

I took me 3 years to finally not want a cig after
meals or out drinking. After word, I calculated
that I had smoked 10,000 packs of Marlboros,
Kools, Chesterfield Kings, etc. Thought of it
made me ill. Try again and keep trying,
please

It is next on my list of important things to do soon! I sure did breath better when I did not smoke. The last time I got in a lake and thought I could swim accross it I was supprised! It would have been nothing to swim over a mile when I was younger now after about 300 ft I am short of breath?? I will quit soon just haven't figured a way yet. Mark H.

Well Mark it looks like you have taken the first step, you know you should. You said above if it did something bad to your health you would quit, now you can't swim 300 feet so it is already hurting your health. It only takes one siphoning of gas and a good swallow to teach you that you don't want to do it again. When you get ready to quit try thinking about the nastyest thing you can imagine, let the cigarette be that thing, and think of putting that in your mouth each time you go to light up. I smoked for over thirty years then quit cold turkey. After the first week your body is cleared of the addiction and it is a mental game. You must choose NOT to smoke everytime the urge hits, it gets easier with each NO! You will find that after awhile you will go several days and not think about having a smoke and then it will be weeks. I havent smoked since Dec. 1990 and almost never get the urge now. Good Luck to anyone willing to try to quit. Now if I could just say NO to food!

You mean you still get a urge after 10 years? I was kind of hoping that would go away after a month or so! Boy that is going to be a hard road to travel when I quit. I wonder why alcolhal was so easy? Mark H.

Yep! I get the urge maybe once a year or so, just stop and think about the cough, the smell, and the cost then say "Get thee behind me Satan!) It's worked so far!

for me, I was completely over the temptation
aftter 2 maybe 3 years. I quit in 1976, now just
being around cigarette smoke on people's
clothing and hair is annoying, but I never let
that get in the way of friendship...friends are
just too hard to find/keep!

Every once and a while I get a earge for a beer but I seem to forget about it in a few seconds after I get it. I think it has to do with the automatic control from the past something triggers it then it goes away. Mark H.
