Last night the wife and I heard an animal call or sound that neither of us had ever heard before, and I'm wondering if anybody might have ideas what it could have been. The noise was something like a raspy screech and lasted perhaps a second or so each. It was repeated at least a dozen times at intervals, but stopped when I put on shoes and started walking out to the back field to investigate and I never saw anything. This happened after dark, about 8:30 p.m. Sound reminded me of something out of the movie Jurassic Park.

We live in rural farmland in central-western Maryland. We have foxes, occasional bears, and I believe I saw a coyote one time two years ago but never since. Other than that, just common small animals around. I know my description isn't too helpful, but anybody have any ideas what it could have been?

My bet would be the foxes. They make a sound that is like a cross between a big cat sound and a baby crying. It is a really wierd sound.

We have wildcats here in the woods around my farm in Maryland; they give out a nighttime raspy screech that'll make your sphincter tighten, especially if you're alone, far from the house and barn, and your only weapon is the Barlow in your pocket.

Sounds like an algore, still whining.

Maybe a blue heron. Have heard something similar to that numerous times, always coming from the direction of one of our or the neighbors ponds. Think something has startled or is annoying them like coyotes. Have heard the same sound when I've come up on them unexpectedly and they go flapping away.

I have heard foxes make some pretty wild noises. I live in Northern VA not far from you and I alwasy attributed it to foxes lookin' at my sheep!

Tom, we've heard a similar noise at my place in N Fla(lower Soganofla). I've never been able to figger it out, either. Our "booger" seems to be somewhat mobile, so I think it's a bird of some sort. It sounds like a cat, but seems to move too fast. First time I heard it, I strapped on my .44.
