When to plant asparagus roots?

Hi all.

I'm getting ready to plant my first asparagus bed. I can't seem to find guidance on when to plant roots. Every place says 'how,' and one source said when to plant seeds but nothing about when to put in roots.

So--which of you smart folks knows when? As soon as soil can be worked (that'd be nice, I could start planting in the morning!)?

thanks,
Tom

Tom- Check your e-mail, for a big .jpg file about asparagas. I've not figgered out how to get it down on size so it'll post here. If you can and do, please do. It's a clipping from the Des Moines Sunday Register, 25 MAR 01. If you manage to post it just attribute that source.

The short answer is to plant now.

Yummy stuff! My 83 going on 18 girl friend gives me frequent "guidance" about taking care of our wild asparagas patch over on the abandonded RR ROW. From the news article I sent you I'm thinking strong about planting a whole bunch more- if the #$%^&* snow and ice ever goes away!

Grins, IHank

Thanks for the article, Hank.

I changed it to B&W and resaved, so it is about half the file size. I couldn't figure out how to post it here directly, but I just submitted it to the Photo Gallery pages under the title "Asparagus article, courtesy of IHank."

I got the land prepped, today's supposed to be beautiful and tomorrow is supposed to rain (starting as snow). Unfortunately, I'm at work in the office...uh oh, I'm starting to feel a little sick, maybe I'd better run home and 'lie down'! ;-)

take care,
Tom

Tom, I put mine in about this time last year. I put in roots that were three years old (supposedly)and didn't expect to get anything from them until next year. The plants came up great last year but no spears. I've already had a mess from them this year and they were great!! Good luck with them. Whizz

Go to your Home Page and type in "Asparagus Culture" and click search. You may find more information on growing asparagus than you want to know.

Not only WHEN do you plant but we need all pertinent info on getting the meximum for the roots. We live in Oregon and have just a small plot but if you would fill us in on the cultivation of roots we would really appreciate it.

Thank you

Betty and Tom Rembosky

I live in Southern Oregon and have roots to plant and I am not sure when to plant them or just how to plant them. Can you give me some advise so I get it right. What type of bed is best, kind of soil that stuff would be oh so helpful also.
