bring home or make some fried chicken ask them the difference. Why was the chicken that was fried any different from the one running through the barnyard? Chickens aren't loveable like cats and dogs. They don't like to cuddle, how can they be pets. We raised calves to mature bulls. Them cute little buggers grow into big slobbering belching foul beasts. Kids had no problem eating them.
Just as an aside, why bother butchering a chicken? they are too darn cheap at the grocery store. I can't feed and raise one and then waste my time dressing it for the $2.50 to 3.00 at the chain store. Probably takes a half hour per bird to dress em out. Even at minimum wage it don't make sense to do it that way. Now if yer so fer back the holler that you only get out oncet per year that may be a dif'rent story.

Explain in terms that the kids can understand that you will not raise any more animals for meat when they all stop eating it.
That is the lecture that my Great Uncle gave us and we got it at that point...
