Just dropping by to see how you are doing today. I had two back surgeries at the age of 31, first one to correct a problem, second one to correct the problem the first one caused - never again.

I am now 60 and if anyone even suggests back surgery I cringe. At least I am still walking and like you keep right on trucking.

Hope you are feeling better and do take care!!!!!

I had two disc removed and three vertebra fused 20 years ago at age 36. I was totally no good prior to the surgery - useless - bedridden and in unbearable pain no matter what position I was in. Today I am totally pain free and can do what I want. Right leg is a little messed up, numb with partially paralyzed toes but I figure it was a very good trade. I guess I was lucky.

You are one of the few and glad ya did well . My hip replacment was a complete succese but the back is a different story . Got good days and bad just happen to be hittin some real bad`ins right now . somtimes it takes all day to get a few hrs. work done other days I`m 90% , been a long time that I hit 100% . I`m just lucky that I work for myself so I can sit down when I need to .

ger    Posted 08-01-2002 at 10:17:42       [Reply]  [No Email]
im glad for you dennis but like i said most i talked had not good results, ijust wasn,t willing to take that kind of chance so i eventually learned to live with it, an once you make your mind up it,s easier i didn,t have the turmoil of the WHAT IFS, this is the life i have ,so get on with it , i can do things here on the farm sure it takes me forever but if i was in a wheel chair i would be stuck in an apartment or somwhere in a town an that would kill me so im comfortable with my choice and im sure glad for you i know the pain isn,t easy to live with ,an sometimes the fustration of not being able to finish what you start for afew days , can bug the heck out of ya but its all in the adjusting , again im glad for you .later gerp.s. mine a degernative diseasean by the time i would be finished i would have to had numerous operations an they told me it would be like having a body cast on no movenment so you see why i choose the route i did .

Dennis in Ma    Posted 08-01-2002 at 15:11:38       [Reply]  [Send Email]
Mine was so bad that no matter what position I was in, it was excruciating. I could not function at all. The Doc said he wouldn't do anything until I had no quality of life and that's what it finally got down to. I had a friend who was in a wheel chair and he was an inspiration to me. We talked for days and days before my operation. I finally figured I had three possible outcomes:

1) it would be fixed and I would be pain free
2) It would paralyze me and I'd probably be pain free or
3) I'd croak and I'd be pain free.

It seemed I had nothing to lose at that point. I had no life at all. Something had to be done or I'd blow my brains out. It worked for me. BUT EVERYONE I've ever heard of that has had lesser surgery (disc removal but no fusion) has ALWAYS had problems afterwards ! I've never heard of one that didn't either go back for another round of somekind or a fusion and then it didn't work successfully either.

I feel for all you guys and gals that have been thru it. I really feel fortunate to have come thru it so well.

Maybe you best stay in the shade !!! I`m a little better today , gona go let the doc poke around on me , I`ve got an oppointment comin up and if I dont go now he`s gona b__tch when I do hoble in for not goin . I`m like most ya here , I`d never do it again and it aint like gettin your car worked on , you dont get your money back if it dont work but they`ll try again if ya got some more money !!

Sounds to me like them UN folks is shooting them beams at ya. Is ya wearin' your duct tape like Clem told ya? Also, start wearing an aluminium foil hat, too, and make sure it covers your ears.

EIEIO    Posted 08-01-2002 at 11:35:31       [Reply]  [No Email]
I am doing the duct tape but gosh darn when I wear my aluminum foil hat outside my scalp starts a boilin and the sun rays bouncin of the foil is blinding all the birds.

He may not be too speedy but atleast he can still get along

15 yrs ago they told me i had broken vertribes in my back an needed surgery i seen over 12 specialists in 4 yrs an talked to 25 people who had the surgery , only 4 drs insisted that i have the surgery all insurance drs, they said i wouldn,t be able to walk in 5 yrs .that was in 85 , here i am still walking ,had to quit running heavy equipement,do i have problems sure but i still do ok,an in most cases im better off than those 25 people i talked who over the years had numerious surgeries, mostly to try an correct the problems from the previous surgies, will i ever have back surgery ya if i wake up someday and can,t walk maybe, but back in 85 there was only a 50%chance that it would help an a 70% chance that i wouldn,t be able to walk afterward anyway, good luck an hope your hubby gets along ok later ger

Its still only a 50% chance of walking after surgery. Heck befor he had surgery he didnt walk for two months. Now assisted with a cane, cant feel his left foot, falls down from time to time and cant work but atleast he is Walking Not to mention the depression :)
People who have never delt with a bad back injury would never understand the hardships of it. Changes your life and all the lifes around you.
Hope with your back you are having a GOOD day.

ger    Posted 08-01-2002 at 09:28:45       [Reply]  [No Email]
i know ,what your talking about i was just getting married when things started with my back was gonna postpone the wedding by wife to be said no she had already invested too much of her time in me to walk away lol the depression goes hand in hand with stuff like that,i know unable to do the kind of work you had always done etc. makes you feel worthless an depression spins of other illness an hardships on all those around you , tell you the truth i think the depression is worst than the bad back i would make that my number one goal to beat it ,if you have a good frame of mind a loving family an friends you can overcome most anything, but thats hard to have if your depressed all the time , an yes i have the same problems in both legs an some times all down my left side an now its starting in my arms too , but i still think about a friend who had the surgey he can,t walk without a cane can,t drive a car without his right leg up on the passenger seat an he looks like hes looking out the side window an he,s in constant pain , so who better off i think i am.good luck later ger

HI, EO, Ger,everybody.....one thing I can be thankful for, is a good back, so far no problems.....but the knees.....well.....now there is a can of worms.....
on the stupid thing issue......other day I was expectin a phone call.....was sitten in the lazy-boy, fell asleep......phone was on the table in the kitchen, remote for the TV was on the table beside the chair......you got it..... phone rang, grabbed the remote, tried to see who was calling, said "hello" to the remote three times, finnaly realized that I didn't have the phone.....grabed the lever to set the foot rest on the lasy-boy down, by the time I got out of the chair and grabbed the phone off the table in the kitchen......yup......just a dial tone........of coarse, it's a new fangled phone, and I don't know how to bring up the "caller" display.....so.........had to wait for the wife to get home to find out who called!!!!! Heck.... I got two "stupids" over your three "dumbs"!!!! have a gooder R.E.L.

Momma Jan    Posted 08-01-2002 at 10:05:47       [Reply]  [No Email]
I Love this place. Where else can you be in a serious conversation and have all these "stupids" and "dumbs". I also tryed to post about a "DUMB" I pulled two days ago and some how it never made it So let me try again since now I dont feel nearly, lets say "absent minded"
the taxes were due for my business on the first day of August (today) and I was so proud I got them all done and in the mail by the 29th of July, early to boot. Later that night I was almost asleep and relized I had gotten all the paper work off but low and behold didnt insert the most important part, The Check!
Yep I still had in the check book, the check. Now somthing tells me the Tax Board wont be too happy with this. Yes I didn get it off after a phone call to Uncle Sam with a note attached. Even had the Mail Mam date it right infront of me but then again My Sis told me her friend sent them her glasses...........are the stars aligned odd this past few days or somthing cause I know it has NOTHING to do with my memory.
Have a Great Day All.
