This tree (trees?) were found growing in the woods that I had to clear to build my house. It was interesting enough for me to keep and not cut down. It's actually 2 trees very close together but joined here. The left tree is about 6-7 inches in diameter below the join.

Question is: which way did it grow ? left to right in the main picture or right to left ?

Another question: how does this happen in the wild when I can't cause it to happen if I tie two together !

That's a rare one Dennis - don't blame you for saving it. Just offhand, it looks more like a graft on the left side over the 2 little leaves. The other side looks more like a natural branch.
Also, it looks like the left tree was sorta split at some point so that would have exposed the cambium.

I tried some rudimentary shaping and grafting, some of the big Poplars on the farm are knotted now - 40 years later. and i've twisted 2 basswoods like corkscrews. experiment! :)

if what you say is true, how is it that the cross branch at the union on the left tree is larger than that of the right ? I'm really stumped on this one.

Dennis, the dang pictures are too close-up for me to tell exactly what I'm looking at. Plus, my monitor ain't very big. Any chance you've got one from a little farther distance?

dennis - how's this.......    Posted 08-01-2002 at 18:25:44       [Reply]  [No Email]

I think I figured out how to shrink the pics. My camera is pretty high quality and takes large photos. Hope this is better.

Looking at that picture, I would say it definitely grew from right to left.
