a 5 month old baby was snatched from a stroller and killed by a two year old bear in new york state south of us but not too far away it is the first reported killing of a person in new york state we have noticed a lot of bear activity around because of the drought the berries are all dried up and the bears are getting hungry

No berries to eat, poor things.

They say the Laurentians are blue with blueberries. Looks like if your big, nasty and everything is afraid of you, you don't need to take on a food seeking existance. They can just peel back a banana from that old garbage can over there, and if that's not available, peel off the skin on the back of the guy lying with his face down like the TV guys says will make 'ole nasty ignore him.

Frickin critters, kill 'em all.

it,s terrible when someone,s get mauled an killed especially a child ,i too live in bear country an have grizzly,s wandering around here as well as blacks , but people have to take some responsibility , they have to stop leaving garbage , food anything that will attract bears i live in a little community here where some people have lived for 40yrs an get all upset because of a bear hanging around i go to get rid of it for them an find a big 50 lb. bag of dog food sitting on there pourch, i tell them if you don,t care about what happenes to the bear you should at least be concerned for your kids an clean this up . some neighbours down the road have a flat deck truck piled shy high with garbage , they had a dead llama asked me to haul it out to the bush i did next night i was out got home call on the machine called back black bear chasing their llams around , ended up one had got hung up in the barb been there for days rotting away in the heat , they never checked on there herd i guess , now they know why the bear was around 50 feet from their house ,this bear was a young one starving too, if there,s nothing to keep them around they will usually pass thru, here in b.c. we have a bear aware progam that educates people , i don,t know how well it works , but it seem s to me if you use a little common sense an don,t leave out stuff for them , it would be better for all , i laugh when there problem becomes shunks instead of bears because of there pet food left out , i,ll take the bears over the skunks anyday. in the bush it,s a different thing like grove r said about the ranger , but nowadys too you can pack bear spray an make noise to try to protect yourself you gotta remember where you are , my opion anyway have a good day later ger

Sept 1st is 'legal' season opener here in VT.
It is reported that VT has the most dense black bear population in the lower 48 with an estimated one for every 3 square miles of land.
Most of those are in the Northeast Kingdom and along the spine of the green mountains.

You shoot em, and I will skin, cut and package.
No dump fed or fish-bait shot please...

My mother told me about that last night when I went up for a visit. She gets NYC tv channels on her satellite.
Stinkin bears are one of my pet peeves. I agree with Spence. Don't tell me we have "invaded their habitat". That's a bunch of barbra streisand. There's more bears around now than there ever was in all of my 55 years and prolly more in NH now than when the Pilgrims arrived in Massivetwoshutts. When I was a kid there was a bounty on them. Maybe time for that again.
I had one come right into my house one night and my brother had one with his head and shoulders through the screen of his bedroom window. Can't shoot enough of them to suit me.

I know I'll bring on the animal lovers for this
but that is one animal I'll shoot on site.

Too many maulings. Every time one happens we go into some kind of self analysis to find out what we did wrong. Then everyone goes to bear avoidance courses and human behavior courses. I say hogwash, just shoot the %^%$% on site. They have over a million square miles to hunt and they decide to stay near us. I say screw it.

Same goes for dog maulings. Ever see a baby girl who's going to be disfigured for life and she doesn't even know the hardships she will have? I say charge the owner with assault.

Thanks for the venting time.

Hi, Spence, Les, Bob; this also brings out a pet peeve of mine regarding some TV programs of late, about bears, seems as though these people are going out of their way to tout bears as being dear sweet animals that wouldn't hurt a fly!!! Well, I live in bear country and have seen first hand what a bear can people and animals, and my heart goes out to the parents of the child!!! Quite a few years ago, one of the Rangers was out on a "walk about", for lack of a better term, he was attacked by a bear, from behind, mauled, then buried under some brush and stuff, after waiting as long as he could, he managed to start crawling towards his vehicle, [don't remember how far away it was], the bear came back and overhauled him again! this time he was not able to try to escape! After being too long over due back at the "station", his partner went looking for him, luckily with his rifle at hand......anyway....dead bear... and partner almost that way, took two years of in and out of hospital to be able to at least walk! And...other instances of the like....and the way these people are coming across on TV, is to say that bears are "safe"! They should be treated as the "killers" they are capeable of less!!! R.E.L.

Hogman***Grove,Ya got it all wrong,see---    Posted 08-20-2002 at 22:43:13       [Reply]  [No Email]
what that smart Govmint man said was ta wear bells on Your shoes and make lots'a noise so's They'd noe Ya was comin'n i'ff They still come at Ya ta wave Your arms'n yell "go way bear",jest keep yellin till it left.
That is also what was bein taught by a classroom teacher in grade school.
These are tha same idiots that say We should get rid of all Us pollutin farmers cause theys plenty of food in tha super market. Sides that, We can import all tha food We need from Countrys that are not regulated like We are so far as pesticides etc and are subsidized way beyond anything tha American Farmer gets.
Sorry I jumped on tha soap box, just that I get allfired burned up at Ignorance!!!!!!!!!!!

ger hey grove r did ya see    Posted 08-21-2002 at 10:11:41       [Reply]  [No Email]
hey grove r , see the news last night bout the guy from prince george tha got mauled an they had to fly him to edmonton, now this guy was an experience hunter an had his brother an both were armed still didn,t save him, a guy ,s gotta be more aware of the dangers when your in the bush your on their turf an you had better be prepared for anything , the more you know about things the better you can be at dealing with whatever comes up, but thers never any guarteenes later ger

Grove r ain't that the truth.....    Posted 08-21-2002 at 06:26:45       [Reply]  [No Email]
