Whats with these hyphenated last names!?! People taking both mother and fathers last names? Kids with 7 step parents picking and choosing names and putting them together?

Am I the only person that foresees the problem of doubling name leangth? Mary Bordon-Chester and Mark Smith-Johnson have a girl and name her Jessica Bordon-Chester-Smith-Johnson... What will Jessica name her children? It's all insane! Imagine the phonebooks in about 50 years! Glad I am not a mailman.

"...and the two shall become one flesh..."

Husbands and wives are supposed to share everything: work, play, money, kids, problems, happiness. Everything. One name. Hyphenated names are a reflection of our selfish society.

Now our ancient tradition says: it is the husband's name the couple shares, although I don't think it really really matters that much. If the two folks agree, then it is probably ok for the man to take the women's name, but it is important to decide on that one name before marriage. If you can't agree on a name, you probably won't make much of a marriage either...just two individuals, not one flesh.

Just my opinion.

This is my first (and only marriage) but it is the wifes second.

After her divorce she took back her maiden name and when we married she kept it for 'business' purposes and it bothers me not in the least.
'The Girl' has my last name and that is fine with both of us.
She knows her name, my name and Mamas' full name.
Just normal to her...no Hyphen...no sweat...

Hey Pat..you're [almost] right!!    Posted 09-22-2002 at 21:01:35       [Reply]  [No Email]
.I wake up and cook breakfast[with enough time ahead;my hubby will get in his puter after breakfast before he goes to work]
.Bring my daughter to school and move on to my job[meanwhile between walk-in clients and phone clients I find the time to make my domestic complaining calls to my telephone, internet, utilities, bank, cars,INS, companies,etc..etc...
.Get my daughter back from school.
.Clean the house.
.Do the laundry[fold it and get it in the drawers]
.In the mean time cook a delicious dinner[I'm a good cook and this is my way of letting him know I've been thinking about him, dinner is !@#$%^&* important to him]
.I know very well that when I get home I like to have the noise level to a minimum. So does he...[my daughter has a well equipped room for her needs...]
.I hate nagging[my mom knows it very well, she passed away in July,I miss her like !@#$%^&*]whether is input or out-put,so please, don't even think about it!!
.His friends are very important to him,I host for them and make sure their glasses and plates are refilled on time.[I jump from the puter to the livingroom of course]
.Make sure the loving deparment is taken care of..
.I'm not perfect[I'll get everything done in my own time and place, not when he feels it has to be done] but I try to make sure my home is a place of peace and tranquillity where everybody can enjoy their own space.
...and Pat,he doesn't do much housework apart from taking care of the Tech stuf..and that's the world for me..:-)

So yes..i'm keeping my maidem name[Thank to this my hight school friends have been able to find me over the www] but where it cout the most I'm Mrs.van der Bend.

PS: Don't know about that[how did you called it?]womans lib movemant?,just want to have fun and live in peace!!And you're right...nothing's wrong with this scenario..and I cherish it...

We had a situ-a-shun, where mom and dad separated.
So, kid takes on new name of:
Jessica Dadslastname-Momsmaidenname. (This confused everyone at school.) Since then, I
believe there was a reconciliation, and the
name went back to normal.
Now who's decision about the name changing, I
do not know, this was a HS student.

WHAT NAMES? ron-I-really stepped in it now-and I'm dead meat-son of a farmer-PA    Posted 09-22-2002 at 16:53:46       [Reply]  [No Email]

See, names are all part of respectability & self-preservation. The less names you have, the more honorable you are (like Kennedy, Jesus, Elvis), whereas if you have a name like John Wilkes Booth or Lee Harvey Oswald or Osama Bin Laden or something, people oughta be leery of you without further explanation..

Now, all our kids are blessed(?) with a 12-year sentence in school and we all know kids can be cruel, right? So by the time some upstart yells out, "Hey you Jessica Bordon-Chester-Smith-Johnson-Rockefeller-Heffner-Manson you --" already they think she's either has a ton of admirers or runs some dam law office, and that made them hesitate, which helps the bedragled urchin survive the day.

Aww pishtosh, say no more - glad to help :)

Who knows where these things may wend Their weary ways. Historiacly speakin tha folk of Mexico bein mostly unable ta read er rite used family names combined ta keep track of tha family tree. Hence, padros middle name is His Mothers maiden name. It's sorta like We'uns do with registered hogs, horses'n cows not ta mention dogs which is tha logical answer fer hillery but as Fergus would say thats a nother story
