Keeping deer out of the garden

I have never had a problem with deer until purchasing some property about 30 miles from here-I tried to plant a small patch of field peas and the deer gobbled them up as soon as they came up. I want to plant a big winter garden and dont want to feed the deer. Does anyone have any helpful ideas? I saw some gardens cirlcled with the yellow plastic "crime scene " tape. Does this keep deer out? What about an electric fence? Any help woulod be appreciated- this is near to a large tract of paper company land, so killing ALL the deer is not possible.

a few things you can do

an 8ft fence anything less and they can jump it - some people put a 6 foot fence with a 2 foot overhang like the kind they have for barbed wire, except they just have a wire going around. deer can jump up or across but not up AND across

a pack 3-4 of crazy dogs - sister in law has chesapeake bay retrievers - they bark at the drop of a leaf...make sure they have a good run of the area...

shorter fence but with bait - hang the bait from the fence - electrify the bait - the theory is that the deer come to the fence and stop, see the bait go after the bait - then get shocked and run away.

kill one and leave it near the garden - this is what airports do to keep deer away from runways - might start to stink after a while - but just pick up wind of the carcass

motion detector sprinkler systems gives em a good shot of water and scares them away, however if the hose is off or the batter fails your stuff is toast -

Ivory soap - works if hung directly from the plant

the guns dont really work - unless you kill em and leave em

anything else is just deer fodder

Deer see in black & white, the ribbons blowing in the wind tend to make the nervous. electric fence helps but is not guaranteed ether. One of the newest and neatest things I have seen is a propane cannon that automatically shoots off every now and again. I don't know how well it works But the principle seems to be sound.

I have heard from a number of sources that human hair will keep deer out of an area. Stop by a local barber shop or two and pick up a few bags of hair. The spread it around the perimiter. I believe it is the scent that drives them away, so it may be best to find a barber that does not wash hair before he cuts it.

Good Luck, let us know what happens,

Get some blood meal like they sell for rose fertizer. Put it in a shaker container like parmesan cheese comes in and shake a little over the crops you want to protect. You'll need to do this as frequently as it washes off due to rain or dew.
Have a friend who claims a "fence" made of a few strands of kite string stapled to light weight wooden steaks about three feet high will keep 'em out. Try suspending disposable aluminum pie pans on strings over the garden - they'll flutter in the slightest breeze.

I know a guy that puts four 55 gal. drums out on the corners of his garden. He painted them black. During the day the drums will heat up and expand in the direct sun. At night they will contract and make a loud thump. He swears that cured his deer woes. Each drum will thump. Never together and never the same time each night. He swears the deer spook more over the drums then they do over his dogs.

I got another friend that put up a motion detector light system. He said it did 2 things: it drove up his electric bill, and gave the critters better light to eat by.
