Shop heater question

Have any of you built a double barrel shop heater using 30 or 55 gal. drums? ANd if so- how did it work out for you?

Had a wood stove in the garage for a few years.
Found out it was better to use an old oil space
heater like they usta have in the 60's and 70's.

Hate feeding the stove every few minuts.

Yep same here except my problem was once the thing got burning proper I had to open the big doors to cool the place down enough to work, Then I was in the cold anyway

Yup, a barrel is about the most popular shape and handiest out there for burning wood, even though the most efficient stoves contain only 1 1/2 cubic feet. My double-barrel worked good, only i should have mounted the door lower cuz it was smoky when i was loading it. That's the biggest problem with Woodmaster boilers too, they have that baffle lower than the top of the door. Heat rises and there's no use fighting it.
I still like the barrel shape but it would take some tinkering. I tried adding a shelf to carry the smoke to the fwd chimney but the materials i used kept melting and sagging. Double-barrels are a trade-off, you can either have more heat or a cleaner chimey - tricky to get both.

Good idea to put the door low. I think I'll just use one drum. Did you put sand in the bottom of yours?

Yup, about an inch of sand. The ashes build up and WILL work, but they don't hold heat like the sand does. You can line the bottom with firebricks too - don't have to be so fussy when ya shovel the ashes out. The furnace i built uses them but then i'm always burning odd stuff so the boiler has to survive my imagination. :)

I don't use them any more but when I did, I always put sand in the bottom. I keeps the fire from weakening the barrell and rotting it out, which lets the fire fall out on the floor!

I won't ask, but I can imagine. Good advice- thanks Ron.

Our stove will sit on a sheetmetal pan, and I'll put sand in the thing too. The collar that the flue passes through is 24" square. The building has a tin roof. All this said, I'll still keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Can't be too safe.
