How much ice for ice cream maker?

Got a big ice cream maker and want to use it for the first time this weekend--wife's extended family is coming over for a day.

I got recipes for the ice cream, but nowhere does it say how much ice you need...I don't want to run out half way, but I don't want to buy too much either.

It is a 6 quart handcrank freezer, and we think one batch will do it. Can anybody give me an idea how many pounds of ice I should buy?

thanks!
Tom

As I recall from the days when we milked cows, had kids at home, and made ice cream at least twice a week... I believe if you buy 2 bags of ice at the store, you'll end up with about half a bag left over.

Tom, here's a link to The Ice Cream Parlour. In their FAQ section, it says 1 part salt to 8 parts ice for a handcranker; how much would depend on the size of the bucket. This site has great recipes as well.

Do you have one of those White Mountain ice cream freezers? I have an electric maker, but have been looking at the handcrankers and these seem to be the ones to go with. I'd be interested to know your opinion on how well it works.

Thanks. We got the White Mountain. Out of the box it appears very well made. I have a good friend who got one last year and uses it *a lot.* He loves his, which is why we went with this one. I'll let you know what I think after using it, but first impression is very good.

Maybe this link will help, it lists different ice cream makers and their directions on how to use it. Also check "make ice cream" on your browser. Good Luck
