Hello,
on our visit to Nova Scotia last year we had an issue of Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine on our bedside table in almost every B&B. A subscription would make up a nice christmas present for my wife, but I haven't found _any_ information over here in Germany and none on the internet as well. Are they out of business? Thanks for any help/link/adress.
Regards
Olaf Winkelhake

Hi,

Harrowsmith magazine has gone through many highs and lows over the years...It is now published as Harrowsmith Country Life. The contact information I have is: 120 Eglinton Ave. E., Toeonot, Ontario, Canada. Phone: 416-481-2657. They have a toll free subscription line: 1-800-387-0581, but I don't know if it will work outside North America. A year's subscription is $35.00 (Canadian). They don't have a web site. Good luck!

I stand corrected!    Posted 10-03-2002 at 10:31:50       [Reply]  [No Email]

Harrowsmith is no more.

The Magazine used to be published just down the hill from my house here in Charlotte, VT.
The folded a while back, but have come back as a new magazine called 'Farm & Garden'.

Old issues of Harrosmith show up on eBay...

Well, you're almost right. I am the owner of Farm & Garden Services. We were never affiliated with Harrowsmith Country Life. We loved the magazine and were sad to learn it had ceased publication in the US. It is, however, still in publication in Canada. Which is why we stopped using the name Harrowsmith - it was still trademarked.

Farm & Garden Services continues to change as I see different needs. We've recently thrown out our previous website in favor of a new one. The new format provides news headlines from around the world on the topic of sustainable/organic agriculture. But this is just the start.

It is my intent for Farm & Garden Services to fill in the much needed gap of a centralized online resource for anyone seeking information/skills/recipes/jobs/etc... in an agrarian community/lifestyle. Naturally this lends itself to those living in the country but not necessarily farmers.

Envision if you will a cross between Organic Gardening, Harrowsmith Country Life, and US Extension Service and you'll get an idea of where we're headed. Of course I have to find a way to make the concept pay for itself but.... ;)

It is also my vision to provide a resource for exchanging information between web-based resources. Articles, links, classifieds, and job listings can and should be exchanged dynamically. There is much work to be done.

Feel free to drop me a note if I can be of more help. I hope this clears up the mystery of Harrowsmith and Farm & Garden Services.

Salmoneye,
thanks for your early morning reply. Must have been around 6 o'clock at your part of the globe.

I've heard that the US-version in VT folded a couple years ago but the Canadian branch survived - at least the usenet messages from the late 1990s said so.

Thanks a lot
Olaf

I did a Google Search and found that the parent company was in Canada and that the offices below me here were distribution and 'research'.

Same company as far as I can tell.
I also did a serch of 3 or 4 magazine subscription clearing houses and they all pointed to the site that I gave you as to the 'new' name for the old company...

Put www.harrowsmith.com in your browser window and you are redirected to Farm & Garden...

Good Luck!
