Rat Problem Part 2, Homemade Zapper Maybe?

Ok, confirmed, it's a field rat.

Some of you elecrically enclined might have something to add to this but I was thinking of cutting out a heavy gauge circle about a foot across. In the center I'd attach another circle about 4in across raised about 2inches from the bottom plate. On the 4in one I'd put some bait. I'd attach one end of elecrical cord to the bottom plate and the other to the top, fused of course to about 8 or 9 amps, so's I don't fry my extension cord.

I suspect the critter would crawl onto the bottom plate raise up on hind feet and latch hold of the top plate as he climbs on top.

I'd wet the bottom plate for better conductivity.

Would the thing just cook there and cause a fire, or would the fuse burn before that? How much current is required to zap these things anyway?
It would be in my basement on a dirt floor so no kids or pets are down there and no one goes down but me anyway.

Thanks.
