Assault rifle buzz in media

Well some retired FBI idiot was on the today show this am, ranting about the sniper's rifle and how this demonstrates that assault rifles should be illegal. That just said "Whoa there" to me. Correct me if I was dumb drunk when listening to the news, but didn't the sniper only fire one shot each time? This accomplished marksman, as they called him. He used the rifle as a single shot! He could have gone on the same deadly rampage with a single shot, flintlock, 1750's musket. I have a 110 year old single shot remington rifle which is every bit as accurate and also could have been used. Something about this self-appointed know-nothing expert just rubbed me the wrong way. With such illogical reasoning, its no wonder it took hints from the criminal himself for the FBI to catch him. This is America, everyone as a right to say their piece, but to do so with such lack of logic and facts makes me wonder why a show like Today would even have him on.

Yall correct me if I'm wrong but I was thinking an assault rifle was one that could fire semi-auto and fully-auto at the flip of a switch, was the rifle the sniper used capable of this? Or was it the general apperance of the gun that makes people think it's an assault rifle? (Oh, my that looks like the gun the military uses it must be real dangerous we need to ban those) Fact is ANY gun is dangerous in the wrong hands and as far as that goes people bent on doing harm can make a weapon of about anything, look at the boxcutter used on one of the planes on 9/11, heck I've assaulted a dog bent on doing me harm with a short length of 2x4. I own alot of guns and will fight anyone who tries to take them and if your good with a gun one shot should be plenty, personally I cant afford to shoot a gun that spits out $20 worth of ammo before I can get my finger off the trigger. GUN CONTROL is- being able to hit what you aiming at

Well it's about time folks learned that GUNS DON'T KILL, PEOPLE DO. Now with that said, most everyone with any common sense knows that if some sicko bustard wants to go out and kill 1 or 1000 people they will find a means to do so even if there are no firearms available, he11 that was demonstrated on 9/11 with box cutters and Boeings as the weapon of choice, or at Oklahoma City where they used diesel fuel and fertilyzer. We need to do away with the criminals, and not the tools.

Fawteen - Silly person!    Posted 10-25-2002 at 15:33:46       [Reply]  [No Email]
You're applying logic to an issue that will be decided by emotion!

#(%$Y&% Anti-gun lobby LOVES these incidents, cuz they can whip stuff by us while everybody is all riled up.

You're absolutly right! It's scary to think about how many people who don't know anything about guns and will take his comments as truth because he's an FBI man.

I remember when there was a vote to abolish assault rifles. The vote in the senate was close. Undecided senators were begging for someone to give them a reasonalbe use for assault rifles. Darn near resigned my life member ship to the NRA. They kept quiet. (it was the time period they were moving their headquarters). I had just retired from the National Guard where I spent the last few years running the marksmanship unit. I spent several years traveling around the country shooting tens of thousands of rounds through an assault rifle (M-14, MIA, M1, and M-16s). I've ran across thousands of ligitment assualt rifle shooters. Civilan as well as military. This was during the height of the DCM's M1 sales. (Army selling M1 to civilians). Why didn't the NRA speak out? I wrote then and never recieved an answer. This wasn't an accomplished marksman. It dosn't take much of a shooter to hit a man size target. An accomplished marksman is one who can keep a fist full of bullits in side of a dime at 100 yds. Ever hear of a "Distingushted Riflemen" snipping somebody. I think not.

PS:Distingushed Riflemen Badge is an award give to competitors that fire (and place) service rifles in DCM matches. Give you an ideal how many are out there, my number is 1071. They started in 1876,

Les...Thank you Kraig    Posted 10-25-2002 at 15:56:35       [Reply]  [No Email]
A friend of mine ran the marksmanship program for the NHARNG back when I was in. I always liked to shoot but never got as serious as a lot of people do. (Prolly having 20/400 vision has something to do with it!)
If you want to save a lot of lives in this country, take the booze away. Heck, just taking it away from the Kennedys would help a lot. ";^)

Fawteen - Ooooh, you done it now!    Posted 10-25-2002 at 16:00:47       [Reply]  [No Email]

I started out the day reading how I was constantly bashing liberal Democrats. And I'm proud to be in the company of Augie on that matter, BTW. Funny when the bashing is from the other side, it's all "just in good fun".
Must be that the truth hurts, eh? In order for humor to be effective, there has to be an element of truth to it, I've always heard.

LH    Posted 10-25-2002 at 16:59:33       [Reply]  [No Email]
Well Lester why don't we just stop all the bashing altogether? I won't make another comment about the conservatives if you don't make any comments about liberal democrats.

Maggie/TX    Posted 10-25-2002 at 22:31:49       [Reply]  [No Email]
That idea sound good to me, since I'm a conservative Democrat who says, out of my cold, dead hands will they take MY assault rifles!

screaminghollow    Posted 10-25-2002 at 23:41:35       [Reply]  [Send Email]
conservative democrat? isn't that a contradiction in terms? I guess things are a whole lot different in TX. Our dem candidate for governor up here wants to put a limit on the number of guns you can buy to one a month. Heck, the missus would skin me alive if'n I bought that many.

Don't git Gomer all riled up. BTW-I was over on the talerban board looking around and run across their GOP link.

Les    Posted 10-25-2002 at 18:19:35       [Reply]  [No Email]
I'm only doing it in fun, doncha know. I couldn'ta said it any better than Fawteen.
You can tell I'm serious when I have both eyes open and my fingers aren't crossed.

I noticed my name was on the list of bashers too. I'm offended! I only bash morons. Is it MY fault most of 'em happen to be LD's?

JUST KIDDING, FOLKS! Don't bother warming up the flame throwers, I won't respond!

normanlly I am not into discussions of gun control but you are 100% right about single shots. This is why we can,t come to any agreements on gun control as media takes every thing out of context.
