Anyone have any good ideas for bear-proofing the garbage? We can't put anything outside until we practically hear the garbage truck!

Step 1-set metal garbage can on rubber tire.
Step 2-hook electric fence to metal garbage can.
Problem solved.

Usually have to do this every spring when they come out of hibernation. It only takes once, for each bear. Then I am good for the rest of the year. They wont touch it afterwards.

If I had thought of that, I would apply for a patent!!
Super Idea!

Also works on raccoons, dogs and almost any thing that touches the can. Including me if I forget to shut it off first.

Kate -- what county are you in? I'm in Monmouth and so far we haven't had any bears here (yet). They've had them out around Trenton and Princeton, as well as up north. We have enough trouble with snakes, coons, possums, etc., etc., without adding bears to the mix!

Have you checked with your county extension service? They may have some tips for you ....

Kate, they really are hard to foil,, short of a steel 55 gallon drum, with a lockable lid, (which most garbage persons will not even try to open) you can''t do much to discourage them. We have a very bad problem with them here in PA, but yours seem to be much more domesticated!!!! If they are that bad, perhaps you should consider bear skin rugs. (just kidding)

After talking with a buddy who lives in south Jersey I don't believe the citizens of NJ are allowed to defend themselves against anything anymore. Something to do with the rights of the criminals comming before the rights of the honest citizen. I would guess this means wild animals of the 4 legged variety also.:-(
