First off thanks one and all for your advice and I did go back and read the previous posts about stray critters. I posted a couple of pictures maybe you can figure out what she is.

On our way to vote Dennis and I posted her pictures at the post office and the store we also said that if anyone wanted a cute, lovable puppy that is NOT chicken chaser to give us a call.

I have named her Stray Dog, thought that would be very original LOL!

Thanks again and I guess you can say that I would feel very guilty if I took her to a pound. I am looking to see if there is a rescue program around here that might also help. But I will wait for a few days before I do that.

If she isn't claimed in a coupla days, why not have the first ever online dog-naming contest right here and see how it turns out? See what everybody comes up with ....... :)

I am all for that and I promise to use the name we all vote on - This should be fun!! We will give it until Sunday AM. This is a very small town and if she isn't claimed by than well I will have a small dog, medium dog, and a large dog. Don't tell Dennis yet though. I have to figure out a way to pay to have her fixed.

I hate to tell you this, but it kinda looks like one of the dogs I shot before we headed off to NC. I didn't really want to do it but had no choice.

You see just the other day I saw one of the neighbors dogs down at our place with three of her pups. I didn't mind if they were there but we noticed that some of our cats were missing. The older momma cat had just had some kittens and didn't have them hidden very well. I found one of them in the yard kind of chewed on and part of what I figured was another one of the older kittens. Right away I got suspicous. So the next time the dogs came by I took a good look at them. They looked kind of starved,so I put a little dog food out for them and called the Town Chairman. I told him I figured they belonged to my neighbor up the road. He said he would give him a call. Later I noticed them sitting under a tree with most of what was left of my cats sitting in it. About an hour later I looked out to see what they were up to and saw one of the pups eating one of my cats. Well that pi$$ed me off,so out came the rifle. I took a shot at the momma first but didn't get a real clear shot. Got a shot off at one of the pups and nailed it dead center. In the mean time the phone was ringing and when I checked the answering machine it was the Town Chairman. He said that he got a hold of the owner and he had said that the dogs were not his. That even pi$$ed me off more because I KNEW they were his. I told the Chairman what I had done and didn't have time to take care of the rest because of the upcoming trip. He said not to worry he was going to hunt the dogs down while I was gone. These dogs would probably have been good dogs if they had been feed and cared for,but they had no choice but to become cat killers to survive. I hope the problem was taken care of while I am gone.
If you have room for this little pup you should just keep it. That way it won't have to suffer becoming what some dogs do become.

EIEIO    Posted 10-31-2002 at 16:13:12       [Reply]  [No Email]
She hasn't eaten the outside cats yet, in fact the dog and one cat were just eating out of the same bowl. I feed the cats in the barn with the other critters. Stray I fed here at the house outside and here comes mischief and last I looked they were sharing.

The sheep and goat are still afraid of the pup so we will just wait and see. I am just worried I will get attached and the owners show up. But than that would be good for the owners and the puppy.

Larry    Posted 10-31-2002 at 16:59:18       [Reply]  [Send Email]
Your pup looks too well fed to be any trouble. I bet someone dumped it off near your place thinking you would take care of it. Not uncommon to see this happen.

Well she is a mighty fine lookin pooch. I can tell you without question that she is a genuine all American no doubt pasture bred Heinz 57 pureblood Arkasas tinfoil guard dog. And since you specialize in tinfoil hats she no doubt sniffed your place out and decided it was home. Now a nice registered pooch like that is obviously worth some big bucks and probly escaped form the Reynolds Wrap Aluminium foil Co. so I'd go pull them posters down and keep the purty little thing. I think that "Heiney" is a much more appropro name than stray.

EIEIO    Posted 10-31-2002 at 14:10:32       [Reply]  [No Email]
OR I could call her tin, foil, aluminum, silver, shiny, tinsel, metal, glitter, sequin, oh I feel another one of my headaches coming on!!!!!!

Looks like it may have some border collie mixed in. Don't chase the livestock or the chickens? You may want to keep it. Could turn out to be a good dog for around the house. Lots of critters that like a chicken dinner once in a while are put off by even the scent of a dog.

EIEIO    Posted 10-31-2002 at 13:44:43       [Reply]  [No Email]
Thanks, it is really strange she just kinda looks at the chickens and that is that. She checked out the four ducks and no interest at all. The only time I have seen her chase the chickens was about 1/2 hour ago when they were way at the front of the house and she just chased them to the back and went into her sleeping space and layed there. Yes she has her own sleeping space.

Hogman*** YA GONNA FIX A HOUSE FOR HER?    Posted 10-31-2002 at 13:55:22       [Reply]  [No Email]
Mabe YOU ain't got it yet as ta havin adopted Her but SHE KNOWS She has adopted You so Ya just might as well throw in tha spunge'n admit it!

And, if She has Lab blood what ever Her short comins they'll be made up for in lovin. I think Labs are one of tha greatest critters ever outsida baby pigs mabe.

EIEIO    Posted 10-31-2002 at 14:06:09       [Reply]  [No Email]
I already fixed her a nice warm bed and she has the back porch/garage. She doesn't like sleeping in the barn. Dennis wanted her to stay in the wash house but that is where the hens lay their eggs and I didn't want the layers disturbed although any hens that jump up on a bureau that I use to fold clothes to lay their eggs are already disturbed. So she has two barns, back porch and even the empty pigpen to select from.

Bless Your heart Dear one You've just confest! Best go tell Her what She already knows,She'll feel better known that You know.

I'll let you know after Dennis reads this post. I just get so upset, if this is a drop-off dog, the people that have critters but will not take the responsibility.

Dennis says if I keep the dog I will have to start a collection in order to get her fixed. We do not believe in populating an already overcrowded critter world. I could always sell my story about trying to find you and all the creatures I ran into. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hogman*** We have payed--    Posted 10-31-2002 at 18:02:36       [Reply]  [No Email]

So you've given her a name huh? Looks like you'll be keeping her. :)

We had a stray here about twelve months back. We weren't in a positon to keep it so it had to go off to the pound...a decision we didn't really want to make but because it menaced the poultry so severely...casualties...the decision was made easier. It had been in the area for a few farmer was going to shoot it because it menaced his calves, but it got away on him.

We thought we were doing the right thing sending it to the pound...if it hadn't been dumped someone would be looking for it....the pound is the first place most folk look when their dog has gone missing. Biggest mistake we could have made.

Turned out it belonged to some one visiting his brother in the area. When we found out who it belonged to we contacted them to let them know it was at the pound. Geez were they mad...not as mad as me that my chooks had been mauled. They spent the next few months blasting their car horn everytime they drove past our place. I was going to put a sign on the fence that said, "Honk if you're a prat"

If a stray turned up here again and it was friendly to my birds I'd probably keeping it if it was nice enough. From the picture you've posted EI, Stray Dog looks like a nice dog.

That is what worries me, what if she does belong to someone with kids and they are heartsick. If I take her to the pound she may be put to sleep. Plus she seems to be a well kept dog.

My husband and I looked at the pictures and we both think there may be some Lab in her family woodpile. She reminds me of a couple of the neighbors dogs who are the result of their border collie mother and our black Lab. Only thing, she has shorter hair than they do. She has a sweet face! :)

EIEIO    Posted 10-31-2002 at 13:50:30       [Reply]  [No Email]
Dennis said the same thing. He thought she might have a little lab in her. She is cute though. We already have one inside dog and two inside cats so she would have to stay outside. The outside cats are doing better with her today. The sheep and goat are still a little scared but one good thing, they didn't like being with Halfpint during the day and since Stray showed up, this morning the two of them went right into Halfpint's pasture and are sticking to the Pyr like glue. Critters are sure fun to watch.

"But I will wait for a few days before I do that". Famous last words. Simply accept the dog as the newest member of the family now. In "a few days" you will be too attached to it to get rid of it.

named the dog, dog has it's own sleeping space.... sounds like she's already there. Just put an old blanket on the porch for her and enjoy.
