How does the zone alarm software work? I guess it
sounded like you have to shut your computer down
different now to keep it from locking up on shut down

Zone Alarm is a fire wall to protect your computor from being hacked into when on the internet,if installed right does not lock up your computor. If computor is locking up you have some software that is not compatible with each other running at same time.Do not shut Zone Alarm off to go off internet.
I usually get warnings about every 1/2 hour that someone has tried to hack in,you have to remember that advertisers do this all the time to send you spam for what you look at on the internet.

I don't know much about it. It's suppose to block access to your computer from other sources or something like that.

I'm sure walt, salmoneye or some others could tell you more.

What I do know is my computer would freeze up as it was shutting down. It would hang at the Windows 98 screen. Holding the power button was the only way sometimes. Someone suggested shutting down Zone Alarm first. So far, it's worked, no freeze up on shutdown.

I do get an occasional freeze up during surfing though.
