Sometimes I sneak over to the tractor tales board. I don't post there because it seems to be an all-male board, but the subjects interest me. Today I came back totally confused: What does "Ping" mean, when posted in answer to someone else's post? Maybe someone who uses that board can explain?

Its the noise your tractor engine makes when its not timed properly....

Slo has given you a good general answer as to what 'ping' means when used on the Tales Board...

The term came into general use from another avenue of 'chat' though known as ICQ...Users of ICQ have an individually identifiable 'number' that they are 'assigned'...when someone wants to locate you in the ether, they send out a request to find that number (which is actually a person/computer) so they can chat...This request is known as 'pinging'...If you want to talk privately with someone, you tell them 'Ping Me'...actually it is even more basic than that...a 'ping' is any packet of info sent out to locate a computer...and yes...the 'reply' is a 'pong' or 'ping reply'...you can actually do this by going to start/programs/MS-DOS Prompt and typing this without quotes:

"ping 63.106.153.110"

That will tell you how far away Slos' computer is given in a time of nanoseconds...Or it will tell you if his computer is 'invisible' such as if he has a firewall...This is one way hackers know that you are there, online and available...they can then start probing your ports to find a way into your computer...

More info than you wanted, eh?

Sorry...I am coming down from my Turkey High and get all wordy...

;-)

Thanks! I think I just got a genuine answer out of this bunch of certifiable nuts (but I always did like nuts).

Well, "ping" is a secret word. Women are not allowed to know the definitions of secret words.

Does that mean the penny finally dropped? :)

Yes, that's what it means.
