Men with Long Hair...and ponytails...!
[Return to Topics]

I always had a notion about older men w/ponytails under a cap w/receding hairline. I suppose it
depends on what's inside a person that counts--that age old lesson still rings true.
Say, Do some Vietnam Vets wear the ponytail
and not cut their hair? I know two such gents
and wondered if their is something to it?
(I was quite young then.) Thanks.

Well, I don't have a receeding hairline or a bald spot on the crown of my head, I'm 49 years old and have long hair on my neck that I dont tie up in a pony tail cause it hides the ringlet curls that hang down below my collar. I like it, my wife likes it and so do my daughters. It keeps me warmer in the winter. I guess I let it grow cause I'm too cheap to spend the money on a regular hair cut. Besides why cut it when it just grows back anyway. That's why I stopped shaving.

This is as long as my hair ever got (maybe 10 years ago) Never had a ponytail but i like the looks of them. Normally, i can't stand it on my ears or neck.

I did two tours in Vietnam. Have short hair. Never had a ponytail or wanted one. Wear cowboy boots, hat or a cap daily. Own and run a beef cattle operation full time. Drive one new truck and a couple of old ones. Whatever the locals think of me, they think. We don't worry much about hair styles around here.

Big 10-4 Fenny, let em think as they like.....I live in cattle country and have never had a cowboy hat on my head, had one pair of "cowboy" boots and they would like to have killed ma feet!! Have seen some here that dress to the nines in cowboy atire...looks like they are going to a coustume party.....oh well, thats up to them....guess they think the same of me....quit wearing "crotch cuttin" jeans a long time ago, guess becuase I don't wear ma pants at "half mast" like some do....suppose it saves some in leg length though.....Guess maybe I'm a product of my work "environment" must be close shaven in case I have to wear SABA, supplied air breathing apparatus, no loose clothing, must wear fire retardent coveralls, [that really bugs me, can't have my arms bare, and now I have to have them covered at home or I sunburn]! and, for the first time in my life the need for sunglasses has finaly arisen, [safety] sunlite reflecting off the surroundings....bright!! And, I do drive an older pickup, '88 3/4 ton, leave the Aerostar fer goin' ta town and such...well, that about sums kup my misguided lifestyle....have a gooder, R.E.L.

I forgot I am kind of Red Neck too. But I don't wear a coboy hat. Own one wore it when I got married on horse back! Rode off into the sunset after my horse blew snot all over the Preacher! Great wedding cheap cost did it in the country setting at her parents farm. Mark H.

Well that is right down my alley to answer! I do not wear a cap or have a receding hairline (only 51)but I did go to vietnam and do have a pony tail. First off I keep it in a pony tail to keep it out of my eyes. I have not cut my hair for over 6 years think of all the money I have saved. I have it long for two reasons my wife wanted me to let it grow and for a statement. Most people have short hair and blend right in with the crowd never to worry what others think. I have long hair shoulder length+ and stand out a little. I do not drink nor do I use drugs. I also do not realy have to deal with the public much anymore so I do not have to blend in anymore. People know me by my hair and remember me by it so that helps a little. I don't style it, just brush it back and put it in a ponytail to keep it there. My statement is that I am not following the rest of the crowd and do my own thing. I live in a red neck Cowboy kind of town where most carry a can of chew in there pocket wear cowboy boots, caps or hats and drive old trucks. I do drive a truck tho. Short hair on others dose not bother me and I had short hair for 25 years. Now it is long while I still have some, and it dose not make the man it is what's inside that counts! Mark H.

Well I'm with you on saving money. I got mine cut a couple weeks ago which made for almost 2 years since the last cut. I'm too young to have been in vietnam(by about 18 years) and I don't care about making any statement. I suppose I'm just lazy, but really everybody's got things they don't care about. And other than washing it, and brushing it, which I think feels really good, I don't give a dang about my hair.

for a hair cut in about a dozen years , they brought a 7% tax in up here on everything including haircuts , i figured i needed food an gas an tools etc. but one thing i could do with out was haircuts,if i had to pay tax on that too , this went on for a few years , wife started wondering if i was turing hippie again , goin through my second childhood etc , finally she realized i was serious , an offered to start giving me haircuts just trims at first to clean up a bit now she has back to somewhat a normal apperance ( i dont look like grizzly adams anymore), an i still don,t pay the tax on haircuts lol

When Uncle Sam's Motorcycle Club let me out in '76 I did'nt get it cut for 4 years just to make up for the time. In the eighties it stayed long but had a trim every couple of months. Now that I'm old fat and married I have Momma take the sheep shears to it and buzz it off in the summer and about Labor day it grows thru to Easter or so. The way I figger it is If you ain't payin my mortgage or sleepin with me I don't much give a Hoot what you think.
