Like I told you earlier today I went to the Sinterklass Duth party. Didn't feel like going at all. This big ticket Heineken guy has a nice place there. I had never been to this suburb's community before. A beautiful family home.

They had in the back yard two barrels of Heineken beer coolers from witch you could serve your glass of beer.

In another booth, a great cook was grilling beef Kabots, tapas and all kind of goodies.

I'm getting used to these Dutch gatherings and I love it but somewhere along the road I'm always lost in the conversations cause I don't speak dutch. They love to tell me that I should learn duth, BUT, we are in PUERTO RICO!!!, so....don't you think they are the ones who should learn some SPANISH??!!

Most of them speak english but somehow the conversation will always switch to dutch.

Any way, they are great ppl and of course I've made some good friends there. I met the mother-in-law of this great dutch family that could as well be from PR or Arkansas, for that matter. It's funny how can ppl from around the world relate to your own customs, way of living, sorrows and happiness also.

So there I was, with my anthenas pointing to whatever I could recept, you know, foreighners in my own country... and there I was, trying to be the ambassador of good will from my island; I'm a travel agent so I'm ready for anything, when suddenly ...ban, ban, tuk bink, tuk bink, tack tack... a puerto rican band bursted in through the front porch with this exiting PR hollidays tunes!! Needless to say, I ran out to welcome them!! Wow!! they were great, everybody were dancing and screaming at me " Candy, do you know those tunes, can you sing those lyrics??!!" hehe, can I....

I had fun, I mean, get me some good folks willing to have fun , from wherever in this wonderful world I've been given the chance to live in??...I'm there.

Now, I'm ready to hit the sack, back in my country home, had to drive 65 miles to get here..but what tha !@#$%^&* , PR is only 35x100 miles, you blink? and you're there.

PS: My pump went caput...I think the water tanks are empty, What should I do to the pump after the tanks are full again? Do I make any sense?

Language and cultural barriers could sometimes get the best of you in any given moment.
My mom would tell me from time to time that I would burry them all...[don't know if in english the saying has the same meaning as in spanish]
She meant that the world could fall apart around me and I would just blink..or something, hehe

Is not like that at all, I just like to live and let live. And I've said it before, I don't even nag at my husband..I learn from a very early age that there are things that I shouldn't try to change, and that they're better left alone. Never felt a need to inpose my oppinions on others , only for sake's argument.

But don't push me..not for a whole year and believe you can get away with it. I mean my main language is spanish but english has saved my day more than once and in more than one country. They speak english, so why sudently switch to dutch? and then ask me with a big smile " so....when are you learning dutch??" , can you get my point?? I have never ever ask anyone of them if they already learned some spanish...why?? [and here's where my mom's saying applies loud and clear], BECAUSE I COULDN'T [!@#$%^&] CARE LESS!!

About PR's in USA?? , won't go there....if you don't mind thank you.

Re:"BUT, we are in PUERTO RICO!!!, so....don't you think they are the ones who should learn some SPANISH??!!"

Exactly - when in Rome, (try to) do was the Romans do! Unfortunately, especially in America, one runs into that Yankee ego. People insult foreigners without even realizing it. I think language choice is part of freedom of speech - use whatever one you're comfortable with, do your best to communicate and let the listener learn!

I chuckled when the media acted surprised that Saddam had his arms declaration written entirely in Arabic. Well duhh!!! We should have expected him to hire a Portugese or Italian scribe, for pity sakes? heh heh - So often we forget that America only occupies 4% of the land in the world - a little tiny corner - the MAJORITY might see things a little different. :)

Hope you get that pump fixed :)

Yes they should learn spanish    Posted 12-08-2002 at 10:42:41       [Reply]  [Send Email]
Yeah carp I feel it would be respectful if they learned/spoke the native language......ESPECIALY AROUND THE NATIVES ......My point exactly !
No yankee ego here my friend, I see it you and I are agreeing on this point....You just dont realize it yet. No name cause peeople have a tendency to go off half cocked(study your own words..VERY simular to mine...Different side of the coin) Face it the first thing people form other countries say about americans when they dont agree is "YANKEE ATTITUDE". BUNK ! Its a catch all and dont mean squat. lets talk about respect. I work in a large factory. 800 people,(northeast) The racaial (oh i said that word)makup is 1/3...1/3 1/3 I have (friends?) on all sides(some of my biggest supporters are black, some P.R. its my fellow white friends? that i get the most crap from the othes like me cause they think im fair, blunt but fair) But I cant stand it when I'm having a conversation and(pick one) the P.R. guy im talikng with decides to hold a "portion" of the conversation in there native tongue ???? What is it that they cant say so I can understand ? They speak english just fine one minute and then there ashamed to be talking with me?? What gives ?? Some black folks are fine then their buddy comes along... Its damn rude. I wouldnt do it if it were reversed. I now its not the way they were raised cause I know many older folks(spanish, african amerikan) who would NEVER think of doing this. Do people come here to live the dream ?? why am I treated this way in my own country. I feel just like what patria said Theres a big hairy wall thrown up and I'm just supposed to do what.....feel like an outsider ?? I respec these people for what there doing and for what they have gone through to gwet here. why do I not get the same respect in return. Why would the want to seclude them selves from the main stream ?? I dont get it. I dont think our government is doing right by these groups(Affirmative actoin hurts both sides, Making me learn spanish as a second language aint working either) Just when it looked like racisim was going by the wayside the govt(my real prob here and should be your concern too) starts this nonsence. If you've read this far i ask you to re read this before making your mind up. Put the clique away and pull on your thinking caps. I aint trying to hurt anyones feelings and I only judge peepole by the way they treat me. I think thats fair. Whats going on in my neck o the woods is not fair to anyone, where you live may be totally different. AND ITS NOT ALL OF ANY ONE GROUP, kant stand the race thing no matter where its from. Aint gonna say gooder again.....Just thought it was cute.

Patrica, a good friend of mine once dated a girl whose family was P Rican. But she was raised in the hills of Tenn. It was so funny when you see this girl who is Hispantic and when she would talk to you this hillbilly accent would come out!

you reminded me Mudcat - I'll tell you what stopped me dead in my tracks once: A bunch of us are shipping out, probably halfway to Naam so we kinda had our sea legs, and i'd occasionally hear a very proper British accent, me being curious, i had a million questios but never could see who was talking. One day we're chowing down and i'm exchanging jokes with a couple of the fellas, and all of a sudden i hear this gorgeous baritone british accent that sounded exactly like James Bond! Well, i looked over and the fella's black! I was so shocked i guess i stared, and he noticed and kinda paused -- here i was staring at him -- and i finally relized he apparently wondered why -- so without ANY thought, i blurted out my explanation "You SOB, you're BLACK!" Oh i tell ya - the whole galley was in hysterics and i spent the rest of the trip avoiding him because everytime he'd see me after that, he'd glance at his arm and crisply repeat "Oh Load - it's happening a-gain!" Boy did i get razzed about being "that one white fella"!

I often wonder what became of that guy ........ :)

If you feel this way then why is it that    Posted 12-08-2002 at 04:35:48       [Reply]  [No Email]
The P.R.'s living in the states are trying to push spanish on us as a second language. I'm sick of this and it needs to stop. This once great country is coming apart at the seams with specail interest groups. Time was, you came poor and pennyless, worked hard learned the language and did well. Nowadays all you have to do is get off the boat and it's all free handouts and weel cater to your every whim also. everything is written in spanish, dont people realize this drives the cost of EVERYTHING UP. Patria come if you will and please bring your respect of our clutre with you, seein as you've seen it from the other side, mebbe you can wise up a few allready here before there forced into a false second class. had enuf REAL class discrimination in this country without the govt and spec intrest creating their own. Thanks for hearing me out. Have a gooder.

The above post was not written by me, R.E.L., though my closing was used, which I do not mind at all.....but I wish a signature would have been used....just clarification....have a gooder, R.E.L.

Is it jsut me or does it seem like there's lots of these folks who are afraid to sign their names on the posts for some reason or tother

Grove r    Posted 12-08-2002 at 07:56:38       [Reply]  [No Email]
Hi, LH, sure seems like it....don't mind a bit on some one using my closing...but it makes it seem like I wrote the comment....wether good or bad, is not for me to judge....but, I can get myself into enough trouble, without help! Do try to take the middle of the road, sometimes, but more often than not, I suffer from 'post in mouth desease', which causes me a lot of consternation as an afterthought....oh well, no one said I was the brightest candle on the cake....have a gooder, R.E.L.

You were making sense until you got to the pump part! LOL Sounds like you had a good time. I only speak one language and can't speak it all that well. It would be nice to learn another language!

Are ya talking about the pump for your house water?

Patria / PR    Posted 12-07-2002 at 20:23:26       [Reply]  [Send Email]
Yeah Nathan, for my house water.
I think I should do something to the pump but don't know exactly what, when and how.
Moved to the country in july and got a funny package to deal with.

We'll be gratefull for any input about it.

Nathan(GA)    Posted 12-07-2002 at 20:53:48       [Reply]  [No Email]
We will need more info. Do you have any water coming in the house? Will the pump run? Is a breaker tripped? Is it a jet pump(above ground) or submersible(in the well)?
