A while back there was a young Mom, recently divorced, as I remember who was trying to put her life back together. She had a number of posts, and many of you folks responded with kindness and understanding. Wonder what happened to her, anyone know?

Yep thanks Bob. What i do remember along the canal on the way to Toronto - every lawn was mowed and every house was painted. Ya couldn't get that here if ta paid them to do it ..... course, if you mention water shortage, they'll leave their sprinklers on all day too. And if a cop starts writing a ticket, pretty soon half the county is standing around listening. Never tell a German it can't be done! (IOW it don't take much to entertain us :)

DC, that is how we used to get old Fred, a Dutchman to fix electrical stuff for us,say" You couldn't fix this could you?" If you look in the gallery and search for Bank Barn you can see a pic of the crew building my Grandfather's Brother's barn in 1906. The farm houses and buildings are a lot like the ones in Penn., alot of the first people to farm around here where Mennonites from there and everyone else built their buildings the same way.

Yeah we had things like the bank barn around here too - and Mennonites. Kiellors and Allebachs were Mennonite missionnaries here to bring the Lord to us "Jack Pine Savages" but they didn't realize we already had every other religion. They adapted though, and built a basement church that did okay. Us kids attended Mennonite bible school cuz they'd give us a free ride and bring us home. And the bible school teachers always wore black wool skirts and those little gauze caps. Then when they took an auto trip back to Pennsylvania, they were ex-communicated for being too modern. Clyde Allebach is still around - he doesn't preach anymore but still "marries and buries" a few - and fixes-up bicycles for needy modern kids. Quite a guy! :)

Hello--

I'm the daughter of this Clyde Allebach you refer to in this story. He's still alive and well and stirring up mischief wherever he goes!

DC,I wish that I had the camera last fall, our Thanksgiving monday in Oct. We took Robert back to Waterloo to school and came in by the back roads. There was a guy with a 5 horse team of Clydesdale's pulling a 2 furrow wheel plow, that was a sight to see. They could move right along with it too.
