Hi All,
With all the holiday cheer I read on this board I thought you might like this info.

What is a troll?
The term "troll" can mean a number of different things, but in essence, a troll is a person who aims to have 'pleasure' at your expense. There are two main types of trolls:

1. people who are psychologically disturbed, and seek to feel good by making other list members feel bad. This is a sort of "psycho troll", whose deception involves deceiving themselves as well as others. In this respect, they are no different to the sorts of people we meet in everyday life who are disturbed - some of them are easy to spot, and others aren't. Such people may even use their real names on the internet, and they may not even realise that they are "trolling" because it is all subconscious.

2. people who pretend to be someone that they are not - they create personae that you think are real, but they know is fictitious
What is a TROLL??????
A troll is someone who usually appears on forums such as this with either unsavory and derogatory replies to posts in place, or initiates posts that are knowingly inflammatory in nature and which many times prompt numerous and heated replies due to their unkind words. This seems to be a game for them and ignoring these unkind attacks is best although difficult

A troll in an internet sense is someone who just likes to cause trouble on a message board. These trolls amuse him/herself by "stirring the pot".
There are actually troll clubs who score points on the number of responses they get to a nasty post. The greater number of responses to the troll's post, the more points they rack up. They start with decent posts and try to come across as helpful, knowledgeable people, get folks to warm up to them. Then the fun begins when the true colors come out and the confusion begins. That's why it's important to identify them and not respond to them.

I would add one more category of Troll, the investigative Troll.

I am aware of at least one such troll. At least he was one before the internet forum providers knew they could store IP addresses for later verification, thereby ensuring a person couldn't use several aliases for any given forum.

His antics were quite hilarious really and he was sometimes correct in his summations.

His main reason was to test if the apponent was rejecting his point on the bases of sound reasoning and logic. He would use the reports only for discussion and debate within his own sphere of friends and never did reveal his antics on the web. In fact he was quite a-matter-of-fact about the whole thing and thought it quite innocent, but would have me in stitches with his stories. he said it was no different than writing a script for a Soap.

For instance he would, like the original post says, take on different personalities. It works something like this. Lets just say he's Tom and someone on the forum would disagree with him on a point. He would create 2 others as new members, 1 of which conveyed neutrality and the other hostile against Tom, and one most likely to gain favor with the intended victim. He would work around the neutral to start. One neutral would start to present an argument that was in essence completely the same has his view, but would admit he disagrees with Tom. The neutral would nuzzle up to the hostile on different matters gaining favor. Now Tom would disagree to start, but would convey that the neutral's views are similar. The neutral would disagree and start to work on gaining favor with the hostile on a completely different point. The hostile will start persuading the victim that Tom is only partially correct.

And so it goes on and on until he proves or disproves his theory.

This tactic turned out to be successful to a point but it requires great skill in hiding handwriting style and written dialect. Initially he was found out easily, but came skilled at the game. This is pre-ipaddress stuff going back some and doesn't do it anymore. He has on one occasion
since discovered a forum where someone else was using his tactic against him, but he quickly revealed the guy to the forum, and he eventually bowed out. A lesson in trying to out-insane someone crazier than he is Hee,Hee!.

Okay, the Austrian Desert Fox (outa New Orleans) was a troll then - and an elaborate one. On the now-defunct Jesse Ventura board, he'd get home after work, boot up his homebuilt computer (a nice one too - no kidding) and start stirring up an argument. By the time i checked the board, it looked like a few people were cussing each other out, and really it was DF arguing with himself.

Well, this one kid was pretty savvy (oh what was his handle?)("Ispy", that was it - medical student/doctor's son who died in a plane crash - boy he knew these machines!) anyway, we exchanged emails and he somehow discovered Desert Fox had like 20 aliases and went thru like 6 different servers. Ispy would go round & round with DF, call his bluffs, post his home address, threaten to meet him in a specific bar in a certain town, the works. So i got some tips how to tell and started checking now & then - sure enough, the kid was right!

So we finally all pressed the issue one nite and DF got flustered and made a phony post, even used a borrowed server BUT accidently singed the post as himself! AHA!!!! heh heh - he wasn't a bad old fella really, just hated certain groups and played with peoples' minds. Had his own beliefs though for sure. Heckuva lotta fun. He disappeared finally. I expect the clock got him - Who knows?

and I have met people like that in real life.
Even attending public school from grades 1 thru
12, I guess there was some trolls. Back then,
we were told, that's life. Of course, nowadays,
bullying, fighting, gangs, etc. seems more common.

then theres always the term ''friends ", widely used , over rated probably , and sometimes nothing more than a word , but if you find a TRUE FRIEND something to value, a friend is not a friend just because they say there are

thank you nan (tx)    Posted 12-12-2002 at 09:58:27       [Reply]  [No Email]
