Since my last post I've gotten quite a few emails from friends on the board, and two suggested to contact Kim.

So I posted a suggestion that she go back to the old board set-up--with one page for "Country How-To" and one for "chat" as I believe that is the best way to resolve the disagreements on the board.

Somebody already posted (anonymously, of course) something along the lines of "mind your own business," but as a very long-time member of the board I feel too strongly to see a few folks kill a great resource off. This board has helped too many people to let a silly catfight kill it.

As some of you have said, it is y'alls board, so do what you want. But it might help to let Kim know what you think. I'll post the link below for those who don't know it is there.

So to my old friends, thanks for the encouraging words, and good luck with your site.

Yes there is alot less "info" here nowadays. I have even stopped the everyday visit and just pop on here every few days. The 'info" is less so I can whip through it alot faster. Maybe if the poster, in the heading, said, NO INFO HERE, or NIH, that would help out.
But this is how the lifetime of a bbs is. It changes as it grows, i'll stick it out for awhile longer to see the direction of it.

A reasonable discussion with differing viewpoints! Yay!

Fawteen, Dennis, Les, Ron/PA Denis, and LH, thanks for your responses. I just want to set one thing straight--I personally don't have a big problem with the (for lack of a better phrase) "chat room" stuff, although it does occasionally get to be a little much. Like you, Fawteen, I scroll through the stuff that doesn't interest me and try to help when I can.

And maybe I am fighting windmills, but what bothered me from the very start is the lack of respect some folks--on both sides of this discussion--showed to others on the other side. Name calling and hurtful remarks just aren't called for; I don't think it is important "who started it," what's important is not to reply in kind. I guess I wound up on "a side" of the discussion when I challenged the extreme rudeness of some remarks and was labeled "Bill's friend."

The one thing i might add here is that this whole thing is a new medium and we're not used to it. Unlike visiting, new posters aren't especially afforded extra courtesy. Like the telephone, we'll see people who need a life treating us like dollar signs. On occasion, we'll also see flamers who haven't grasped an adequate command of the language to avoid lotsa profanity. What we DO have here is unbiased equality (new posters are as good as anybody - without physical appearaces getting in the way) and a chance to say our piece, however we choose.

The price for that freedom is that we all wear ambassadors' hats. On a family board like this, we hafta be a little less relaxed. And if i post a buncha trash, readers will form opinions about Minnesota, won't they? I can still remember what some rude Finn (maybe trying to joke) said to my mom 3 years ago, and i still think about that when Finland is mentioned, so in the process of recognition, we judge. Fairness has little to do with it. Maybe that's why so many lurk without posting, maybe they haven't seen enough of us to be at ease yet.
Oh, and i have had lotsa fun and learned a few things on 4 other boards that are now defunct. Their demise had little to do with posters. Until somebody figures out how to make a consistent profit on the net, nothing here is permanent so just enjoy the borrowed freedom. :)

I've seen this 'problem' come and go on other boards. I've even tryed to 'correct' it a few times. 'Correct' is in quotes because what I was really trying to do is to convince everyone to adhere to my own standards. Not only is that a lost cause, it's unfair. I may be convinced that The Supreme Being appointed me as the arbiter of Taste and Internet Etiquette, but there's a lot of heathens out there that don't buy it ":^)

I tried the "You folks should abide by Kim's Rules" approach too, with a stunning lack of success. The folks who post here are not my kids, and I have no right to try to mold their behavior. Didn't work all that well with my kids, it dang sure ain't gonna work on somebody else's.

If you look at the last couple of month's worth of this board, you'll notice that about 99% of the time, I only respond to threads that ask a direct question on a subject that I know a little something about, or at least think I do.

And therein lies the secret to Internet Happiness. There's no law that says you have to read or respond to every thread. You've been here long enough to know which folks go off on tangents that don't interest you, or actively annoy you. Don't read those threads.

"Just Say No" may not work too good in the War on Drugs, but it's a dandy way to keep things on an even keel around here...

Fawteen,
Are you the guy that post on Roger Welsch's page as F14? I used to visit there a lot,but when they changed the format of the page it was a lot harder to use. At least it was for me. Maybe the people that want to play can go over to that page. It was a lot of fun and nonsense when I use to go there.

Fawteen - Yup    Posted 12-15-2002 at 11:45:40       [Reply]  [No Email]
That'd be me. ":^)

There's still quite a lot of goofing around and inside jokes on Tall Tales, but the new format is slower than death to load.

Larry    Posted 12-15-2002 at 14:13:01       [Reply]  [Send Email]

I know what you mean about it loading slow. That is why I don't go there anymore. Roger was even a little upset when they switched over. I liked it better when it was set up like this page.
Do you still have your popsicle seeds?

Fawteen    Posted 12-16-2002 at 04:55:54       [Reply]  [No Email]
Yup. Got a little joke planned for this spring with them too. I'll try to remember to let ya know when I post it.

Dennis    Posted 12-14-2002 at 08:54:54       [Reply]  [Send Email]
Well Said.
Thank You.

Tom A, I hope ya don't get mad and leave. I agree with you and wish there were two boards like there used to be. But that's up to Kim and I don't care enough about it to bother pushing for it. I'm one who used to participate a lot more than I have lately. And the reasons are some of the ones you have.
As far as that "anonymous" poster who told you to get a life, he ain't really anonymous. I bet I can tell who it is without even looking up the numbers. People is creatures of habit.
Don't take the world serious. Just think, you could have a Kennedy as governor ";^)

Hi Tom,
I read you post to Kim and saw the cowards response to you.
I guess I am still a little confused about the problem and why you are planning to leave.
Somewhere I read a post that likened this board to a cafeteria, each table is on a different topic, so it is best to seat yourself at one that intrests you and does not offend you. (very wise words)
If we all were intrested in, or were able to answer every post, it would only be 2 people, one to ask, and one to answer.
Just my ramblings,
Later
Ron

"If I want the right to be right or the right to be wrong than I HAVE TO give those same rights to ALL others."

I hope you don't decide to leave because it is YOUR board also, but I guess you will do what you feel is best for you in the end.

You will be missed!

Morning Tom and thanks for your comments. We amy disagree at times but I dont believe in anonymous posting and complaints. And I don think any of us who enjoy the forums want to lose them.
