I have a book called "Tan Your Hide!" by Phyllis Hobson. It has a number of formulas for tanning all kinds of hides, as well as info about treating and working with leather.
It's from Garden Way Publishing, and I think I ordered it through Countryside magazine, for $10.

Bobby was hoping someone would give you a good
formula and go into detail a little, but you didn't get alot of info on this one
I have bought some stuff for Tandy leather but not their tanning kit but I just looked at their book and they have a couple .They also have a switching horse for that guy that was looking for one awhile back .
www.tandyleather.com you can go to their site
and check it out .They will send you a catalog for the asking . I have a deer hide in the
freezer that I'm going to tan some day If I ever get to it .
Good luck Al

You bet Bobby! What you gonna tan? I use brains about 1lb. 1&1/2 gal warm water. Run brains thru blender or just mush up real good add to spring or well water mix real good and heat to about 120 and apply. Coaltrain

Hi Coaltrain,

There was a saying in colonial and frontier days to the effect that 'every animal has enough brains to tan it's own hide'. I did a deer hide once and after dehairing, fleshing, braining, softening, & smoking, I decided that Indian men probably didn't appreciate their women nearly enough! Lotsa work! It was fun, but I'd probably get real tired of it if I had to depend on it day in and day out!

I work at a tannery, and we have come a long ways, since those days. Hides are alot softer, and better equipment!!!!!!
