I broke my own personal policy to post to the Book Burning thread, expressed an opinion, defended that opinion once, and the personal insults and the name calling start. I plead temporary insanity.

I shall return to my previously stated policy of answering the occasional direct question and not reading threads that I find to be a waste of time and bandwidth.

Fortunately, they're pretty easy to spot...

Sorry to see the name calling and personal attacks--it is, unfortunately, rampant on the board anymore. Looks like some folks don't know how to have a discussion without getting personal. I'm afraid it is just too easy to type something and hit "post" without thinking. That's why I don't usually even read much of the other stuff now, and almost never respond when I do read it.

But I look forward to all your country advice. You've always helped me out with good info over the years, and I really appreciate that.

I see what you mean. When I see a post like those I try to make it my policy to wait several hours to reply. That way the urge to reply usually wears off and I don't have to pull my foot out of my mouth as often. I am fare from perfect so this helps. Tom.

I know what you are saying, and I have no problem with a discussion, and even a friendly argument. However, I did the same as you, and broke my own rule of avoiding, such topics, in fact several times.
My reason for backing wayyyy off on this board, is the personal attacks that I got in e-mails. When you open an e-mail that starts with "You must be one stupid son of a b----!!!" you know that you are listening to someone that you can't converse with.
I find that when, logic is absent, name calling takes over. And the absence of logic is very obvious some days.
Like you I ain't leaving, just not going to participate nearly as much. I feel that may be a good thing for the board as well, it will cut down on some of my nonsense that was really not needed nor wanted here.

Ron, I've always enjoyed your posts. Like you, I believe I'll limit myself to chiming in on posts where the subject is somewhat akin to the stated purpose of this board.
Unlike you, I've never gotten one of those hate emails. The hatefulness toward me is just posted right on the board for all to see. (Just look down the page if you don't believe it.) I'm not even going to try to compete with that.

Fourteen, no matter what you say someone will turn in around, regardless weather its tractor/farm related or not. (Just check the bashing of Willy-N or Dell WA on the N Board). What I don't agree with is bashing to the point that we force someone off this or other boards, i.e. EIEIO, because we don't like her humer. Granted some of it was silly but I still enjoyed it. I hate to see one leave because of a few remarks by others.
Regarding the Book Burning, I commented that I agreed with Les on kids not knowing the deffination of Arithmatic. I think the meaning was lost by my agreement. I wasn't trying to say, and I know Les didn't mean, that I think Math is un-emportant, What I was agreeing with was that schools have changed. I want the schools to teach my kids the basics, the 3 Rs. Not morality, teaching MY Kids morality is my and my church's responsibility. Even as a Christian I don't believe religion belongs in school, not because I don't think Christ belongs in school but I don't want my young children exposed to the other stuff.

In short please don't let those who disagree with you run you off the board, we lost too many good people as it is.

Never said nothing about leaving the board. Just ain't gonna stick my oar in on The Big Three.

How bout defining "the big three."

The Big Three    Posted 12-30-2002 at 02:40:18       [Reply]  [No Email]
"S*x, politics and religion".
Either that or Russia, China and the U.S.

Oh, I thought it was threads originated by me, Burrhead or LH, ROFLMAO.......(I really did!)

Heck, let's make it easy - let's put a disclaimer up front - "Caution: this thread doesn't contain references to machinery, buildings, land or anything important. It's just about people" - lol - or what did the guy in the cafe say? "Opinions are like axholes, everybody has one"

I never thought i'd get to this century and still see people advocating sameness. Well not me, thanks. If all schools and teachers and cops and counties were run the same, that would be a good thing, right? Naw - not in a free country. Communism would be wonderful too, if it weren't for little issues like greed. Me? I kinda like to see people saying they can't stand avocadoes because it's another proof that they still have a right to gripe. I like to think MY school is doing things pretty close to the way they should be. And that's determined by the community. Oh, and every member of our community is so flawed they could sew it together and export it!

I'll go one step further - EVERYBODY's ego needs to be nurtured. How do we do that? By feeling like we're doing something just a little bit better than the next guy - by getting away with just a smidge of something. Our church has the real answer, we got the tallest corn around, our car is the best one, these are the best shoes for me, my kids are smarter, whatever. I snicker when i "forget" to declare those few bales of hay as income, the tax man snickers cuz he knows that the government doesn't really need that high a percentage of compliance to keep itself running, the politician snickers cuz he got his cousin's road paved, there - everybody won and we're all happy! You all have an excellent Sunday. :)

There is a LOT of truth in what you say DeadCarp. I enjoyed reading that....
