We have found old bottles. Several are a hoot, probably very common.

Dr. Kilmer's Swawmp Root Kidney Liver & Bladder Remedy

Hamlin's Wizard Oil

Grove's Tastelass Chill Tonic

F.A.D. Richter Pain Expeller for Rheumatism, Gout, Neuralgia, Colds, Etc.

Most were discarded in barns and the old privey pit. I have found several jugs also.
Some of the local corn was put up in jars.
I guess that was a good chill tonic too!

Snake Oil Medicine? About 3/4 of the stuff in the vitamin aisle of any Wal-Mart....

Found these (two bottles with the original boxes!) in an old chicken coop I hauled off.

Mike D --you folks disappointed me.    Posted 01-01-2003 at 10:41:42       [Reply]  [No Email]
Hello Fawteen,
Nice find. Can't read the print. Whats it say?

I thought there would be more posts on this. All my neighbors have bottles with tall tales about spinster aunts or crazy preachers. Hidden jugs under the chicken coop, Cough medicine that would take your breath away, etc.
Guess it might strike too close to home to share!
We got some other doozies, mostly about the 'cure-all' approach. Sure wish you tightlipped postees here would have opened up a little and told of your snake oil finds- but maybe you found full bottles and the cat caught your tongue- later on folks... Mike D.

Well, I got a little curious myself, and did a web search on it. Turns out, the stuff is STILL AVAILABLE! Quite popular here in the Northeast, apparently.

I've got no clue how old the bottle is, no dates on it anywhere. It is quite different from the currently available bottle, but the box is very similar.

Dang, and I thought I had some Ebay bait...
