Is there a way to measure out 200 mg. without a scale? It's for terramycin in powder form to be placed in the chicken fountain. As always, any help is appreciated and if it fails, we'll just call it a learning experience.

OW - measure by volume?    Posted 06-25-2001 at 20:57:02       [Reply]  [No Email]
Sure, measure by volume. For example, a regular aspirin contains 325 milligrams of pure acetylsalcyclic acid, right? Well, ASSUMING that terramycin is about as dense as crushed aspirin --
(and that would be a guess)

then i'd go get pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers (to grab tiny stuff), a coupla spoons (to crush a pill), an aspirin and a plastic capsule of some kind of medicine (Ibuprofen or something the missus won't need by morning). Unscrew the capsule and dump its contents down the sink, crush up the aspirin and see how many capfuls it takes to scoop up the 325 mg aspirin. It you don't get real close to 200 milligrams in half the capsule, snip it down a hair.

(I'm not going to mention how to accurately line stuff up with razor blades, okay? :)

Once you get it real close, you could make a permanent scooper from maybe a 22 shell.

For reference --
Grain = 64.80 milligrams = .002 ounces, avoir.
Gram = 1,000 milligrams = .035 ounces, avoir.

For bigger stuff, keep a few rifle shells around -- 30-30 means 30 caliber that takes 30 grains of black powder (pretty fluffy like flour) for a proper load. If you test it, you'll find that a 30-30 shell holds exactly 30 grains of FFFg black powder, filled to its shoulder.

You can also fashion a makeshift balance scale from a yardstick and a clothespin if you know the weight of a coin or a bullet or some handy counterbalance, the weight of the yardstick, and you like to use a calculator.

BTW, your kids might really get a kick out of weighing stuff with homemade scales. You'll have sand and chewing gum and hamster hair all over the yardstick! lol

It's been a spell so won't try to give microscopic data but I figured out how to use a tea spoon as starters but mostly just shook out of tha bag that which looked about right. Always worked far as tha pigs were concerned. Just remember if in doubt "better to overdose"!!! If they start ta glow in tha dark Ya 'd outta cut back a tad. sorry I can't remember the figures but I do have an ohus lab grade scale so was far from a wild guess to begin with. O.W's idea sounds good.
