I have never used self rising flour. My in-laws
said they loved it for cakes, but I would mostly
used it for biscuits/breads category.
What's your experience w/it? Anything I need
to know about it?

self rising flower is merely flour with a leavening agent...baking powder...baking powder is merely baking soda and cream of tartar. There is some discussion on the effects of baking powder/soda on your health...can't remember exactly what I've read, but I decided that the miniscule negative effects were balanced by the positive effects if eating biscuits, cake, cookies etc. By the way, we would all be healthier if we ate nothing but raw fruits and vegetables, but, how fun would that be?

Please tell me how adding baking powder and salt to flour makes it carcinogenic?

Now wait just a minute,,,,, Ron/PA    Posted 02-10-2003 at 09:25:57       [Reply]  [No Email]
How can you pop on and say that, with no backup? What do you mean it's a cancer causing agent? Where did you get this information.
If you have any empathy for your fellow man, please explain your comment. Alot of people eat self rising flour and if you know something that we all should know please tell us.
Thanx
Ron

What a hoot. Self rising flower causes cancer now. Oh he11. Last I heard self rising flour has 1.5 tsps of baking powder and .5 tsp of salt per cup. You just have to adjust these ingredients if you are using it and your recipe calls for more than that.

Cindi, the fact is that nearly everything causes cancer if consumed in sufficient quantity over a long enough time.
We have gotten away from reasonable scientific basis as a justification for concern. Too many of the so-called researchers are just pushing an agenda. Remember the saccarin and cyclamates scares of the '70's? Turned out that you had to drink something like 500 cans of soda a day to reach the amount they were giving the test rats.
I never heard that self-rising flour causes cancer before and I have no idea why somebody would think it does, but until I see some evidence from a reputable scientist, I am sceptical.
There is only one thing I am completely sure of and that is: None of us are getting out of this life alive. Sooner or later somthing is gonna get us.
