My meat birds are eating mud!!!

Why are the doing this?! Something lacking in their diet? They aren't going to get fat on dirt! Anybody else's chickens do this and how did you remedy it?

Yous lucky you got mud! Up here it so dry the fish in the river by my farm have to walk 6 days a week cause the river got only enough water to run down stream 1 day a week..

This is a common behavior in other animals to restore lost minaerals. This could also be a way the chicken finds relief from internal parasites, but I'm just guessing.
Get a vet's opinion.
