Problem with a baby pig

I have a three ? week old pig that had some kind of skin condition that I have never seen before. All the little pigs except this one are fat and healthy and with nice clean even skin. This one has ridges down it's back like an alligator and it is caked with dirt. I washed it off and the skin is literally scaly and has dirt imbedded in it. I don't want to keep it away from the mother for too long but I will bring it in regularly and wash it. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Mange. Caused by mange mites. When this happens to a little pig they get what is called greasy pig disease. Treat the pigs for mange mites then drench the little ones in a iodine solution. Plus give them 1cc of penicilin per day for three days.

Is it contagious? So far out of thirty two this is the only one with the symptoms, and they all run together.

Yes it is. They probably got it from their mother. If you look at the mothers ears you will see what looks like dry skin. This is a stopping off place for the mites as they make their way to the sows eyes to get moisture.(a drink). The mites would affect the piglets more than they would the sow. What you should do is treat the sow and then the little pigs. The best way to do this is to use either Ivomec,or Dectromax. both are an injectable, but the Dectromax will last longer and kill any second hatch eggs that are left on the pigs. It will also kill any worms that might be in their intestines. They both cost about the same. Just make sure you have a Veterinarian figure the dose for the little pigs for you.
The reason I told you to treat the little pigs with penicilin is because greasy pig disease is actually an infection in the pigs skin. You should do this as a follow up to the iodine drench. Of course you won't want to do the drench on the sow.
Next time you are ready to farrow you might want to put the Ivomec in the sows feed to make sure they are clean of any parasites. that way they won't pass anything on to their pigs.

Is it like dry skin? I am not a pig farmer, but when I was a kid my dad had pigs and they would get dry scaley skin, he would use a lil bit of old motor oil on them, never hurt the pig and it seemed to help, plus it kept the flies off,,,I am not saying to do this, this is just what I have seen done.....Jim

It's like PILES of this hard skin all along the back. I could try some veg oil, it sure wouldn't hurt anything.
