When to brush hog?

I have about 5 acres of old pasture that was over grown, I cut down the 3-4 inch pine trees and brushed hogged everything else, that was 3 years ago. Now I have a BIG over grown lawn, looks good and the wild critters seem to like it.

So I'm now wondering when the best time of the year is to brush hog it? Decided not to in June mainly because there was a duck sitting on her eggs still. The farmers around here tell me to do it when you have time, which is OK but still wonder what time of year is better for the critters, wild flowers etc?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks,
David

David, I live way down south and try to do most of my "bush hogging" around labor day, maybe a little later if it is still hot and dry but never earlier.

David, I have some property enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. It can only be mowed from August 15 thru Sept. 15. This is to avoid ground nesting season and as the grass is primarily cool season, gives it time to recoup before frost. I only mow to keep tree sprouts and other undesirable growth under control.
