Question about making hay
[Return to Topics]

This is my first year cutting/bailing my own hay. The hay that I have is orchard grass. There is a lot of under growth, close to the ground that turns brown and dies. You can only see it well, if you spread the green grass aside or when the hay is cut and drying. Is this normal, or is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks for the help.

That is normal, when the orchard grass gets taller its roots draw more of the moisture from the ground and it blocks out the sun from the other grasses and they go dormant until the next growing cycle. Any way thats the way it was always told to me
