Which is better fall plowing or spring plowing?

Depends on your location and soil. Heavy clay is best plowed in the fall so it "mellows" over winter - BUT - my garden is on a hill overlooking Lake Erie where the wind never quits - plow in the fall and a lot of topsoil is in the next county come spring.

We roto-till fall and spring.

In the fall I till in the remains of that summers garden and throw down a cover crop.

Spring comes, till in the cover crop and add in some compost.

Garden is getting way to big for the Troy-Built walk behind so I'm looking for a two bottom and disc.

yeah plow or till in fall time is best deep as you can get. spring do very very light till 1 inch deep. if you have weedy garden just dont plant anything and keep on tilling it all summer till freeze time and leave it till spring do light tilling and plant. I use some news paper put around plant to keep weeds down.

Vote for fall plowing here. Gives time for whatever was turned under to compost. And the freezing and thawing cycles loosens the soil considerably. Somtimes I don't even disk or till, just smooth over with a rake and plant.

I always seem to do better if I fall plow, though many years I don't get around to it before the ground freezes. Gives the soil a chance to settle a little during the freeze-thaw cycles, and also helps kill some of the pests cuz they're more exposed during the freezing weather.

What about erosion?
